The first day of the Class 5A state baseball tournament did not go entirely chalk.

In Class 5A, No .1 Rio Rancho, No. 2 Cleveland, No. 3 La Cueva and No. 4 Piedra Vista won their opening games Friday as the best-of-3 series opened around the state.

No. 6 Carlsbad, No. 7 Eldorado and No. 8 Mayfield also were victorious on Friday. But fifth-seeded Centennial was beaten, 1-0 decision to No. 12 Las Cruces.

Some of the games were routs.

The top-seeded Rams started slow but had a nine-run third and five-run fourth in their 14-0 victory over No. 16 seed Atrisco Heritage.

Brayden Bustillos drove in three runs from the 9-hole for Rio Rancho (22-5), and Wyatt Tinker and Dean Ellison both had two RBIs. Both Bustillos and Ellison homered in the win to back the pitching of junior Matthew Cook, who gave up just one hit and struck out 12 in a five-inning, complete game.

At Cleveland, No. 15 seed Sandia had the bases loaded with nobody out in the top of the seventh, but Storm starter Xavier Vasquez worked out of the jam giving up just a single run as Cleveland beat the Matadors 4-1.

Vasquez was outstanding, surrendering just a single hit while striking out 15 Sandia batters.

Cleveland (24-3) put up three of its four runs in the second inning, including an RBI double from Francisco Hernandez.

At La Cueva, the Bears (24-3) scored nine runs in their first at-bat and routed No. 14 Hobbs 17-1 in that series opener. Dylan Blomker pitched all five innings for the Bears, striking out a dozen Eagles.

Mikey McMullan hit a grand slam during a six-run third for La Cueva, and Dillon Sopher added a two-run single.

Gunner Guardiola fired a complete-game five-hitter for the Bulldawgs (15-12) handed the Hawks (24-3) just their third loss of the season.

In Carlsbad, the Cavemen (17-10) downed Organ Mountain 9-2.

At Eldorado, Sebastian Mestes hit a three-run home run during a five-run fourth inning for the Eagles (23-4) in their 8-4 decision over Rio Grande. Sully Wilson, like Mestes, had three RBIs in the win and he also homered.

In Las Cruces, the Trojans outlasted No. 9 Los Lunas 6-4 as starter Isaac Seldner struck out 12 in six innings of work for Mayfield.

Mayfield (19-7-1) scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 4-all tie; both runs scored on bases-loaded walks issued by the Tigers.

In Class 4A, No. 5 Albuquerque Academy and No. 6 Hope Christian won their first games on Friday. So did ninth-seeded St. Pius, 8-7 on the road Friday night at District 5-4A rival Grants.

A suicide squeeze bunt by Brennan Craver scored the go-ahead run in the 10th for the Sartans (14-12). St. Pius outhit the Pirates 18-9, and had four starters with three hits apiece.

The Pirates had scored four runs in the sixth and seventh innings to force extra innings with St. Pius.

The Chargers (19-7) rolled 9-1 over Los Alamos as Thomas Whitten had three hits and four RBIs for Academy. At the Riordan Complex on the West Side, the Huskies (21-6) doubled up Belen 12-6, with a six-run fourth inning giving Hope breathing room.

Luciano Gabaldon and Trey Baillio each drove in three runs for the Huskies.

Valley and Bernalillo dropped their series openers; the 14th-seeded Vikings lost a tough 2-1 decision to Santa Teresa; the Spartans lost to No. 2 Goddard.

Sandia Prep shut out Hot Springs 11-0 in a 3A series opener.

No. 9 Centennial, No. 4 Los Lunas and No. 3 Organ Mountain also are on to Week 2 despite losing in the quarters.

In Los Lunas, the Tigers blanked No. 13 Sandia 7-0 and the Storm beat No. 12 Hobbs 7-4 in elimination games in the afternoon Friday.

Cleveland took a 6-4 decision from Los Lunas in the quarterfinal game Friday night, as the Storm scored two runs in the first, sixth and seventh innings. Julia Montoya drove home two runs for the Storm (20-8).

The big surprise Friday in 5A was that No. 1 seed Mayfield was three outs from being eliminated by 16th-seeded Rio Rancho in the first round.

The Rams held a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh at the Field of Dreams, but the Trojans (26-2) rallied for the 5-4 win. Freshman Audrina Guillen鈥檚 RBI single was the game-winner for Mayfield, which later Friday beat Centennial 16-6.

La Cueva also led this game 5-0 in the fifth inning.
