After a two-month search, the Chupacabras have their coach.

New Mexico鈥檚 first-year Indoor Football League (IFL) franchise has named Corey Roberson as its next permanent head coach, the organization announced Tuesday.

A two-time IFL Coach of the Year selection, Roberson joins the Chupacabras after eight years in the same role with the Green Bay Blizzard. He won a franchise-record 65 games in that span, notably leading the Blizzard to the last two IFL National Championship games.

Roberson will also serve as the Chupacabras鈥� new general manager. He replaces Jerome Haywood, who served as the organization鈥檚 interim head coach for the final five games of the season.

The Chupacabras struggled to a 2-14 finish last season, the franchise鈥檚 first since rebranding in 2024. After a 1-10 start, inaugural head coach Kyle Moore-Brown stepped down in June and was subsequently replaced by Haywood, a former New Mexico assistant.

After the season ended, co-owner Mike Fietz said the organization planned to launch a 鈥渇ull鈥� search for a new permanent coach.

A Lakeland University graduate, Roberson started coaching with the Blizzard in 2012 after nine seasons playing indoor football. He was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2014 and served as the organization鈥檚 interim head coach in 2018. 

Roberson stepped down as the Blizzard鈥檚 coach on Sept. 2.

Formerly known as the Duke City Gladiators, Fietz and local businessman Bob Pitre purchased the team that would become the Chupacabras from Gina Prieskorn-Thomas in 2025. The franchise remained dormant for a season and was announced as the rebranded Chupacabras in August 2025, with plans to play in Tingley Coliseum.

Average attendance in the Chupacabras inaugural season was just under 2,000 fans a game, Fietz told the Journal in July.
