RIO RANCHO 鈥� Jacari Smith and Joaquin Manning aren鈥檛 quite ready to petition Cleveland coach Robert Garza for more opportunities near the end zone.

But the two defensive linemen certainly didn鈥檛 hurt their chances after Friday. If anything, they might have improved their resumes with a couple of thicc 6s.

Smith scored on a pick-6 in the end zone, while Manning provided a rushing touchdown in the Storm鈥檚 40-20 win over Chatfield (Colorado).

鈥淟inemen are definitely underrated (athletes),鈥� Manning said. 鈥淓specially me and Jacari. We might be the most underrated. (We鈥檙e) faster, stronger.鈥�

Smith struck first. The second series of the game. The sixth play overall. With a little help from his linemate.

Manning had initially corralled Chatfield quarterback Cash Williams for what appeared to be a safety. But Williams decided to try to throw the ball away, only for Smith to be waiting instead.

鈥淭hat was my first time getting an interception,鈥� Smith said. 鈥淚t was my first high school touchdown, too.

鈥�... Their quarterback threw it straight towards me. I wasn鈥檛 prepared to catch it, but it came straight into my hands. Once I had it, I just fell in the end zone.鈥�

It was one of four turnovers Cleveland鈥檚 defense forced. 

Derick Sanches intercepted another Williams pass on Chatfield鈥檚 next drive and Kaeleb Escudero followed up with an end zone-to-end zone pick-6 on the possession after. Escudero also recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter.

All-in-all, the Storm (2-0) scored 20 points off turnovers.

鈥淲e just balled out,鈥� Smith said.

Manning鈥檚 touchdown came on a 3-yard run with a little more than 6:30 left on the clock. Right through the middle of Chatfield鈥檚 defense, which, unlike Cleveland鈥檚, had been battered and bruised throughout most of the game.

The junior wideout logged nine catches for 241 yards and two touchdowns, including a 66-yarder in the second quarter that saw him catch a shuffle pass going to his left before reversing field to run up the right sideline, and a 37-yarder with 43 seconds left in the first half off a flea-flicker.

His quarterback, Michael Denison, finished 14-for-21 passing for 291 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. 

Chatfield (0-2) scored on passes of 75, 14 and 11 yards. The first two from Williams, the third from Kai Hall.

But it was the two big guys who were hard not to notice.

鈥淚t鈥檚 so fun for those guys, man,鈥� Garza said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a rare thing, so I鈥檓 glad they had fun winning it. Anytime a big guy gets to score, it鈥檚 great to see.鈥�

Of course, there is the matter of getting a couple more of those opportunities.

So?

鈥淐oach Garza knows,鈥� Manning said with a laugh. 鈥淗e knows. But we鈥檒l do our job on defense first.鈥�
