Frank Dooley, who won four state championships as the boys basketball coach at Deming High School during a spectacular run in the 1970s, and who also led Alamogordo to a title game in 1988, has died.

Dooley died Sunday of natural causes, his granddaughter Staci Drangmeister said. Dooley was 93.

鈥淲henever you spent time with him, he made you feel like the most important person in the world,鈥� Drangmeister said through tears. 鈥淗e had an infectious love for life and cared for his family and friends.鈥�

Dooley oversaw something of a mid-dynasty in the 1970s, coaching the Wildcats to Class 3A titles in 1971, 1972, 1974 and 1976.

鈥淗e was the ultimate role model,鈥� said Dooley鈥檚 son, Warren Creason. 鈥淭here are a lot of people that talk but don鈥檛 walk 鈥� he did it all.鈥�

Later, at Alamogordo, he was involved in one of the highest scoring championship games in the history of the state tournament, a memorable 4A final the Tigers lost 110-95 to Ralph Tasker鈥檚 Hobbs Eagles.

He coached Deming from 1963-1979, and the school named its court after him in 2010, and the school鈥檚 new gymnasium was named after him in 2017. Dooley also had time coaching at Silver, Mayfield, Cibola and St. Pius.

Dooley was a girls basketball assistant coach at Cibola under both Doug Dorame and Lori Mabrey.

鈥淗e was the coaching mentor I really needed at that time in my career,鈥� Dorame said. 鈥淒espite our age difference, we became very close friends. I will miss him.鈥�

鈥淲onderful man,鈥� Mabrey said.

Dooley was born in 1933 in Deming, and graduated from Deming High School. He also attended Western New Mexico in Silver City. There, he met, and later married, Norma 鈥楯ean鈥� Chaudoin.

Dooley played football for the Mustangs and is a member of the WNMU Hall of Fame. After a short stint in the Army, he attended the University of Northern Iowa where he earned a master鈥檚 degree in mathematics, and those who knew him said he took great pride in being a good math teacher.

鈥淗e was one of the most humble people I鈥檝e ever met in my life,鈥� Creason said. 鈥淚 think great people are people who make the people, places and things they touch better for having been there, and he did that on every count.鈥�

Last year, Dooley was inducted into the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Among his other accolades were New Mexico Coach of the Year in 1971-72, National Basketball Coach of the Year for the Southwest Region (1972), and induction into the New Mexico High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1990.

Dooley, who was particularly fond of the outdoors, including fishing and tennis, is survived by his sons Tim, Bryan and Warren, and daughter Sandy, plus many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A private celebration of life will take place for Dooley鈥檚 immediate family. The community is being asked to share memories and stories online, and donate in his memory, to the Frank Dooley DHS Scholarship Fund, which was established in 2013 to benefit Deming High School graduating seniors.
