Games to watch: Los Lunas-Rio Rancho highlights top matchups in Week 2

1. Los Lunas at Rio Rancho, 7 p.m. Friday
The Rams, after an opening home loss to Las Cruces, figure to be anxious to avoid an 0-2 start, particularly with both games at home. The Tigers may have dropped to 5A, but they still feel like a 6A program to me. Rio Rancho actually will be a slight underdog in this game.
2. La Cueva at Palmer Ridge, Colo., 7 p.m. Friday
The Bears, for the second time in three seasons, venture out of state for a nondistrict game. Their game in Flagstaff two years ago against Pinnacle from the Phoenix area was a thrilling, double-OT win for La Cueva. This will be another test for the Bears, coming off an impressive Week 1 rout of rival Eldorado.
3. Artesia at Hobbs, 7 p.m. Friday
The Bulldogs鈥� new offense was largely shut down by a stern Carlsbad defense on Friday in the opener, and it doesn鈥檛 get any easier for Artesia as they visit Watson Memorial Stadium for a matchup with the 6A Eagles.
4. Santa Fe at St. Michael鈥檚, 6 p.m. Friday
The Horsemen could take over the No. 2 spot on the state鈥檚 all-time consecutive wins (with 35) list if they beat the Demons in this game 鈥� which is a home game for St. Michael鈥檚, but the game is being played inside Santa Fe High鈥檚 home stadium.
5. Carlsbad at Goddard, Wool Bowl, 7 p.m. Friday
The Cavemen made a definitive statement on opening night, rolling up US 285 and thwarting Artesia, and now Carlsbad turns around to face another strong 5A outfit in the Rockets.
