Oregon is not on the schedule for the UNM Lobos this season.

But that doesn鈥檛 mean Jason Eck won鈥檛 be among the ducks.

Mark Diener will see to that.

The 64-year-old Lobo fanatic and living encyclopedia of UNM Lobo and Manzano Monarchs sports trivia said Saturday night as he showed off his new Jason Eck bobblehead figurine that he was going straight home to put it on the shelf in his room right where he keeps only his most prized possessions: His collection of rubber ducks.

鈥淵eah, I collect ducks!鈥� said Diener, whose optimism for Eck and the Lobos could not be surpassed at Tuesday鈥檚 special season ticket holder event at University Stadium. 鈥淚鈥檝e got like 32 plastic ducks on my bedside table.鈥�

Thirty two ducks. One Eck.

While Diener was one of maybe 1,000 optimistic fans who attended Tuesday鈥檚 practice held for select fans who renewed or purchased their season tickets prior to July 6, there couldn鈥檛 have been another in the stadium who thinks Eck and this season鈥檚 team will exceed his expectations.

鈥淭hey鈥檒l be 14-0. I don鈥檛 want you putting 11-1, either. They鈥檙e going to go 14-0,鈥� said Diener, who attended the bobblehead giveaway event with a friend he met at church in 1985.

UNM Athletic Director Ryan Berryman said the idea to put out an Eck bobblehead ahead of this highly-anticipated season was a brain storm that started not long after the successful 2025 Lobo season wrapped up.

鈥淲e first considered this promotion in January as we contemplated ways to add value for our season ticket holders,鈥� Berryman said. 鈥淭o celebrate Coach Eck returning to UNM as a 鈥楻eal One鈥� (UNM鈥檚 Eck-inspired offseason slogan for players, and fans, who announced their return to the team), we thought a Coach Eck bobblehead was the perfect season ticket holder gift for all of the 鈥楻eal Ones鈥� who opted into season tickets before July 6.鈥�

In all, Berryman says UNM would be handing out about 2,000 Eck bobbleheads, but that number comes with some context. As of close of business on Monday, Berryman said, UNM had sold 10,534 season tickets and was still optimistic about a late offseason surge before next Saturday鈥檚 Sept. 4 season opener at home against Central Michigan.

Corporate season tickets, student season tickets and some limits on how many Eck-inspired figurines a season ticket holder could collect (it was one bobblehead for every four season tickets purchased), were some of the limits that kept the total bobblehead number down.

As far as new season tickets sold, UNM has sold 2,600 of those, the AD said. Last year at about 12 days out ahead of the opener, the 鈥渘ew鈥� sales were at 894.

So, did they get the thing right?

鈥淚 think it looks like him,鈥� Diener said.

Ryan Scarlett and his mother, Susan 鈥� brother and mom to former Lobo Michael Scarlett 鈥� also have cherry and silver running through their veins as not only season ticket holders, but regulars on the road to the power conference road games through the years like Texas, LSU, UCLA and this season Oklahoma. Tuesday, they got in line for the event more than an hour before the special practice started.

All in all, for a Tuesday night football practice in August, there was a rare preseason celebratory vibe at University Stadium 鈥� not one of just anxious about any college football season ahead, but one Lobo fans, and the athletic department, have a lot invested in.鈥淭onight was a great night for Lobo football,鈥� Berryman sent via text late Tuesday responding to a Journal request for a reaction to the turnout. 鈥淚 would like to extend a sincere thank you from Coach Eck and I to all of the Lobo fans that came out. I hope to see all of those Lobos, and more, on Sept. 5!鈥�
