La Cueva's boys, Organ Mountain's girls showing the way at Class 5A tournament

Albuquerque metro champion Nixon Knee of La Cueva was the lone player under par Monday at the Class 5A boys state golf tournament at New Mexico State University Golf Course in Las Cruces.

Knee, a freshman, shot 1-under par 71 at 近距离内射合集 to lead the field by a shot headed into Tuesday鈥檚 final round.

Knee started on the 10th hole and was 2-over through five holes. He later birdied Nos. 4, 5 and 8 (his back nine) to get into red figures.

Alamogordo sophomore Dyson Wright and Alamo eighth-grader Brody Wright 鈥 the two are brothers 鈥 are a stroke behind. Junior Brett Wall of La Cueva shot 73 and is solo fourth.

A three-way tie for fifth includes 近距离内射合集 Vista junior JJ Botello, Piedra Vista sophomore Burke Allen and La Cueva sophomore Lukas Strassner.

La Cueva holds a six-shot lead over Cibola. The Bears shot a team score of 297, 9-over par. Cibola (303) is next, and it鈥檚 another nine shots back to third-place Alamogordo.

Organ Mountain鈥檚 girls clearly enjoyed some home cooking on Monday, and the Knights own a 19-shot lead over La Cueva following the opening 18. Organ Mountain was 26-over collectively, La Cueva 45-over. Alamogordo was just one shot behind La Cueva.

Two Knights are tied for the individual lead. Senior Eleanor Warden and junior Alyssa Serna both shot 77, which is 3-over. The girls are playing the 近距离内射合集 course as a par-74.

Kendall Trujillo, a La Cueva junior, is two shots back after a 79.

CLASS 4A: At New Mexico Tech Golf Course in Socorro, Albuquerque Academy and Artesia are showing the way in the boys team standings.

The Chargers shot 25-over (313), five strokes ahead of the Bulldogs. It was another 12 shots back from Artesia to third-place Los Alamos.

Two Chargers lead the way on the scoreboard: junior Alex Hanna shot even-par 72, two shots ahead of freshman Thomas Whitten. Yandel Parra of Goddard is third by himself after carding  a 75.

Of note, Jack Byers of Artesia, the top pitcher for the Bulldogs鈥 baseball team, which is the No. 1 seed for the Class 4A state tournament later this week, is tied for eighth after his 79 on Monday.

Academy鈥檚 girls own a commanding 29-shot lead over second-place Lovington, with St. Pius in third place, 35 strokes behind the Sartans.

Chargers junior Adelyn Haas is 3-over (77) and takes a commanding five-shot lead into Tuesday鈥檚 second round. Hayden Dan of Kirtland Central (78) is solo second, and senior Bailey Alexander of Lovington is third at 83.

CLASS 1A-3A: At Turtleback Mountain Golf & Resort in Elephant Butte, Ariana Williams, an 8th-grader at Cottonwood Classical Prep in Albuquerque, leads by seven shots.

Williams鈥 80 was plenty clear of Tatum sophomore Tessa Kerby and Robertson senior Payton Woolf.

Socorro鈥檚 girls lead Texico by 22 shots after Monday. Robertson was in third place.

The top two boys teams are separated by just a single stroke. Mesilla Valley has that edge on St. Michael鈥檚.
