After reaching the semifinals several times in the past, the NM Rapids 07/08 (U-19) girls

soccer team blitzed through bracket play, then swept the semis and finals at

Development Players League championships in Hampton Roads, Virginia.

The Rapids earned their national championship on Sunday with a 2-1 victory over AYSO

鈥淭his group amazes me,鈥� said coach Justin Sells, a former University of New Mexico star who holds the defunct Lobo men鈥檚 program鈥檚 scoring record with 57 goals. 鈥淎 lot of these

kids, I鈥檝e had since they were 10 years old and they were playing Duke City (league), 

and now they鈥檙e playing and competing at a national level. Every year, they

seemed to raise the bar.鈥�

This season, the team was ready to get after it from the get-go, said goalkeeper

Ciena Carabajal, who鈥檒l be a senior at La Cueva this fall.

鈥淚 had a really good feeling about coming out here,鈥� she said. 鈥淏ack in New Mexico, we worked really hard just to get here. In the years past, we鈥檝e worked really hard and got to the semis, but this time it all just unfolded and everything turned out how we wanted it to.鈥�

After sweeping its regular-season play against teams from Arizona and El Paso, then winning a regional DPL showcase tournament in Mesa, Arizona, the Rapids outscored their three opponents 16-2 in bracket play against teams from Georgia, Texas and Florida last week.

New Mexico beat IFA New England 2-0 on Saturday before celebrating the

championship Sunday.

鈥淚t was a very scrappy game,鈥� said midfielder Joslin Sells, a rising Albuquerque

High senior and coach Sells鈥� daughter. 鈥淚t was not a pretty game, but we pulled it

out. I think going into it, we knew we could win. I think we came in with such a

good mentality because our team is so close and our bonding is so close-knit, so we

knew we could win it. But we knew it wasn鈥檛 going to be easy.鈥�

The Rapids got the scoring started midway through the first half, with UNM

signee Kasey Sandoval, a 近距离内射合集 Vista alum, lofting a pinpoint service on a

corner kick that fellow Lobos commit and recent Piedra Vista grad Analyse Healy

headed home.

snared an errant pass in the Rapids鈥� offensive third, then pummeled in a shot for

the winner.

鈥淭he goalkeeper tried to pass the ball and Britney stole it and stuffed it into the

back of the net,鈥� Carabajal said. 鈥淎fter our second goal, it got lot more physical

and the game got a lot more intense. The game really picked up. Yellow cards. The

other team got very frantic. We had to hold them off for that last 20 minutes. It

comes down to who wants it more and the work that we put in for the entire

And this was a day to chalk one up for New Mexico.

鈥淣ew Mexico, we鈥檙e always underdogs,鈥� Joslin Sells said. 鈥淢y dad always tells us

whenever we go to these events that we鈥檙e going to be overlooked. They see New

Mexico on the schedule and they think, easy game. They鈥檙e not going to going to

take us seriously. Then we come out and show that we can compete. It鈥檚 a really

good feeling. We鈥檙e showing all these other teams that kind of overlook us that we

can actually play.鈥�

With several players moving on to college ball, coach Sells said this was the

perfect way to end their youth careers, although more than half the team returns for

one more season.

鈥淚鈥檝e had this team for a long time and over the years I鈥檝e got to see them develop,

not only as players, but seeing their friendships develop,鈥� he said. 鈥淎 lot of them

hang out off the field. A lot of them have become close friends. That鈥檚 been the

neatest thing for me as a coach. I鈥檝e got that relationship with the kids since I鈥檝e

been around them so long. It鈥檚 been really neat to see them develop as adults.鈥�
