鈥&驳迟; (1) 近距离内射合集 Vista 49, (4) La Cueva 42 |

The Hawks鈥 19th straight playoff victory was similar to plenty that came before over the last five seasons, as 近距离内射合集 Vista grinded out one of its patented defensive gems.

鈥淭hat was the most beautiful, ugly game,鈥 近距离内射合集 Vista coach Greg Brown said.

The Hawks (25-5), with an early offensive spark from guard Luis Gonzales, led almost the entire way. Gonzales was the best player on the floor in the opening minutes, and scored 近距离内射合集鈥檚 last nine points of the opening quarter and a 15-12 近距离内射合集 Vista lead.

鈥淗e definitely gave them a jolt,鈥 La Cueva coach Eric Orell said.

Finley Fitak, with a 3-pointer, and a dunk by David Lunn, followed by a mid-range jumper from Gonzales, sent the Hawks to a 24-17 lead late in the first half.

It was an unlikely source, 6-foot-5 sophomore wing Jordan Rivera, who provided the eventual game-winning shot for the Storm.

He buried a corner 3-pointer 14 seconds into the overtime, and Cleveland scored the first nine in OT. Rivera had a team-high 19 points, the second-highest point total of his season.

鈥淪eems like every game, we have a guy who steps up. Tonight was Jordan Rivera鈥檚 night,鈥 Storm coach Zack Cole said.

Said Rivera: 鈥淵ou know, my confidence has been shaky the last few games. (But) I found it tonight.鈥

Cleveland is appearing in the state final for the first time since the pandemic-shortened 2021 season.

Sandia (22-10) went the final 3:40 in regulation without a point after leading the game 57-53, and the Matadors nearly went the entire four-minute overtime scoreless, until a last-second 3-pointer.

The Matadors received a gargantuan performance from sophomore guard Gad Harris, who just about literally put this team on his back for a lengthy stretch of the second half with guards Isiahah Brown (ankle) and Malachi Knox (hand) both out of the game with injuries.

Semifinals 鈥 Wednesday at the Pit

鈥&驳迟;&苍产蝉辫;(1) Hobbs 66, (4) Albuquerque High 37 |

The Eagles have failed to reach the Class 5A championship game only once since 2018, and on Thursday they ended the Bulldogs鈥 best postseason run in 33 years with this semifinal victory.

鈥淲e鈥檙e not supposed to be here,鈥 Hobbs coach Joe Carpenter said, referencing seven graduated seniors and a couple of injured players. 鈥淭hese kids deserve it.鈥

Hobbs (28-2) won its 19th straight game. Albuquerque High (26-4) had won 16 in a row since losing to the Eagles in the Jan. 10 finals of the Albuquerque Metro Championships.

Junior sharpshooter Kacelynn Muniez shot the Eagles into the lead with a 3-for-3 showing from the arc in the second quarter, when Hobbs opened up a 20-10 lead on AHS by halftime.

The lead was double digits the entire second half, even with the Bulldogs pressuring Hobbs up and down the floor and forcing Hobbs into 18 turnovers.

It was an emotional Rams coach Lori Mabrey who entered the press room, especially since Thursday would have been the 59th birthday of her late husband Buster. He died late in 2024, and Mabrey sat out the 2024-25 season due to her husband鈥檚 health issues.

And she remains very much in mourning, 14-plus months later.

鈥淚 asked these girls to get this one for me today,鈥 Mabrey said. 鈥淚 am extremely grateful for these young women.鈥

And Buster Mabrey was from Hobbs, adding another element to Saturday鈥檚 championship pairing.

鈥淚 think that Buster couldn鈥檛 have scripted it any better,鈥 a tearful Mabrey said.

Sophomore guard Madi Martinez began to get loose in a decisive third quarter for Rio Rancho, which held a tenuous 29-26 lead at halftime thanks to Daysia Jack鈥檚 buzzer-beating 3-pointer.

鈥&驳迟; (2) Artesia 71, (3) Hope Christian 52

The Huskies had no answers for the size and strength of the Bulldogs inside.

Artesia shot 64% from the field and outscored Hope 56-24 in the paint as the defending state champions gradually wore down their opponents in the second half. Center Clay Kincaid led the way for the with 24 points and nine rebounds, while Trent Egeland added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Most of Kincaid鈥檚 and Egeland鈥檚 points came at close range 鈥 and several layups even came courtesy of lobs from the Artesia backcourt. Both Charlie Campbell and Cael Houghtaling tallied nine assists for the Bulldogs. The high-wire act is nothing new, according to Kincaid.

鈥淥ur whole starting five can dunk,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 expect to see more of it, maybe. I don't know. We'll see.鈥

鈥&驳迟; (1) Highland 71, (5) Taos 51

After an opening half that wasn鈥檛 up to their usual lofty standards, Hornets coach Justin Woody gave his team a stern talking to in the locker room.

鈥淚 don't think I can repeat it. I might get fired,鈥 Woody quipped. 鈥淚 was not happy with these guys. We weren't playing Highland basketball. A lot of one-on-one and isolation, not really moving the ball.鈥

The result was a narrow 30-29 lead and a big opening half for Tigers big man Malakhai Ely, who had 18 points and nine boards at the break. Highland (26-4) began to turn the tide midway through the third period, closing the quarter on a 14-4 run to take a 54-40 lead. Taos (25-6) wouldn鈥檛 get closer than 13 points the rest of the way, as backcourt duo of Nico Sanchez and Juan Limas attacked the rim at every opportunity.

With his family in attendance from Mexico, Sanchez finished with a game 26 points and nine steals 鈥 often beating multiple Taos defenders with furious drives to the basket.

鈥&驳迟; (2) Gallup 54, (3) Albuquerque Academy 44

The Bengals (27-4) showcased a little bit of championship composure to hold off the Chargers (25-6).

Down 27-21 at halftime, Gallup outscored Academy by 16 points over the final two quarters to advance to the 4A title game for the second consecutive season.

鈥淚 told the girls, every time you get up here to Albuquerque, it's never easy. You've got to earn your way in,鈥 said Bengals coach Todd McBroom. 鈥淭wo years in a row we've been really pushed in the semifinal game. I'm proud of the girls.鈥

Ball security was critical to Gallup鈥檚 success. The Bengals had just seven turnovers compared to 22 for the Chargers. That was especially key in the fourth quarter, when Academy scored just five points and matched Gallup鈥檚 turnover total for the game.

鈥&驳迟;&苍产蝉辫;(1) Kirtland Central 61, (4) Hope Christian 38

For the Broncos, the early second half is often an ideal time to go for the kill.

Such was the case in their semifinal matchup with the Huskies (25-7). After Kirtland (28-3) closed out the second quarter with a 6-0 run to go up 29-19, the Broncos essentially put the game away by scoring the first 11 points of the second half. At that point, it was 40-19, and Hope faced an uphill climb to get within striking distance. The Huskies would get no closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

鈥淲e thought their legs were giving out a little bit,鈥 said Kirtland coach Devon Manning. 鈥溾 Because they take a little bit of a break at halftime, the legs relax. And so that's where we were really trying to get that separation.鈥

It was a balanced attack for the Broncos, with four players 鈥 Elaina Clani (13 points), Allyson Tsosie (12), Haylee Nocki (12) and Zoey Benally (10) 鈥 reaching double figures. A fourth Bronco, Krista Tsingine-Yazzie, chipped in nine points.
