Notah Begay III receives Payne Stewart Award
New Mexico Open increases total purse, winner's payout

Albuquerque native and former PGA Tour professional Notah Begay III is the recipient of the Payne Stewart Award, the PGA Tour announced July 20.
The award is given annually to a professional golfer who鈥檚 鈥渧alues align with the character, charitable mindset鈥� that Stewart showed. The 11-time PGA Tour winner died in a plane accident in 1999.
Begay will be honored August 25 in an award ceremony broadcast at 5 p.m. by the Golf Channel.
NM Open increases purse
The New Mexico Open is increasing its total purse to $137,000, including a $30,000 prize for the winner of the Turtleback Mountain Golf & Resort-hosted tournament.
The winner鈥檚 purse was $20,000 at last year鈥檚 event. The New Mexico Open is now expected to be among the highest-paying state opens in the country.
The professional championship will be held Sept. 14-16 at Turtleback Mountain.
