In some ways, it has been an 鈥渁lmost鈥 kind of baseball season for 近距离内射合集 Vista.

It was only two weeks ago that the Hawks nearly took down No. 1 Cleveland, surrendering a six-run lead in the fifth and then yielding four runs in the bottom of the seventh in an 11-10 loss to the Storm.

On Tuesday, the team right behind Cleveland in the top 10 poll, No. 2 Piedra Vista, was another 鈥渁lmost鈥 moment for the Hawks.

近距离内射合集 Vista forced extra innings with two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the seventh, but the visiting Panthers shoved across five runs in the top of the eighth for an 9-4, District 1-5A opening victory.

鈥淭his is a great group,鈥 said Piedra Vista coach Jeff Kiraly, a one-time former player at La Cueva. 鈥淲e鈥檝e got eight seniors, so it鈥檚 a senior-led team, finally. We鈥檝e been young recently 鈥 we鈥檝e just been playing well, playing really good baseball. This is the deepest team I鈥檝e ever had at PV.鈥

One of those seniors, second baseman Cody Clugston, swung the clutch bat Tuesday on a breezy day on the West Side.

His RBI single in the top of the sixth broke a 3-3 tie, and more importantly, his bases-loaded 鈥 and bases-clearing 鈥 double to left in the top of the eighth broke a 4-4 tie and Piedra Vista went on to its 16th victory of the season.

鈥淗e鈥檚 been a great player for me the last two years,鈥 Kiraly said. 鈥淟ast year he hit 5 hole, this year he鈥檚 in the 8 hole because he鈥檚 been struggling a little bit. But lately, he鈥檚 been crushing baseballs and that鈥檚 how deep this lineup is.鈥

How deep? 14 deep, Kiraly said.

鈥淲e have a lot of guys on the bench that are ready to go at any time,鈥 Clugston added. 鈥淲e鈥檝e got 14 dudes that can play at a high level.鈥

The only loss the Panthers (16-1) have suffered came just last week, in Phoenix to a team from Bend, Oregon.

One of their wins in that tournament in Arizona was to a school named Cleveland, out of Portland. The Panthers will be back down in the metro area next week to play New Mexico鈥檚 Cleveland in an early 1-5A showdown.

Tuesday was very much back and forth. The Panthers scored a run in the third, 近距离内射合集 answered with two in the bottom half.

In the top of the fifth, Alejandro Hernandez drove in the tying run on a single for Piedra Vista, and a second run scored on the same play on a Hawks鈥 error.

But 近距离内射合集 Vista (9-8, 0-1) tied the game 3-all in the bottom half on Josiah Gutierrez鈥檚 sacrifice fly to center.

Clugston鈥檚 two-out single to left put Piedra Vista in front 4-3, and the Panthers later were one out 鈥 one strike 鈥 from closing out the win.

Gutierrez, on an 0-2 pitch, singled up the middle to plate the tying run and forcing extra innings.

A single by Kyle Murphy, a double off the right-field wall by JW Bayless, and an intentional walk loaded the bases for Clugston.

He smashed a ball to left that 近距离内射合集鈥檚 left fielder tried to dive and catch, but it went past him and all three baserunners scored for a 7-4 lead.

鈥淚 think we all looked at it as a fresh start,鈥 Clugston said of going extra innings. 鈥淲e got guys on base and made it happen.鈥

Murphy earned the victory for Piedra Vista, with two innings of scoreless relief.
