During her three varsity cross country seasons in the burnt orange of Eldorado, Gianna Rahmer has proven to be invincible.

There鈥檚 not been a single race contested inside of New Mexico where she hasn鈥檛 finished first, and in just about every single one of those events, nobody has really challenged her supremacy in the Class 5A division. Rahmer鈥檚 long stride, smiling face and hot pink bandana crossing the finish line all by her lonesome, with no rival in sight, has become a rather standard snapshot in these parts.

Might that scenario change this fall?

The long-awaited arrival of Isla Rahmer is here. The 13-year-old eighth-grader at Hoover Middle School will be running varsity for Eldorado and is poised, several opposing coaches believe, to be a major challenger to her sister鈥檚 dominance.

Even Gianna, the three-time defending 5A state champion, said she believes she and her sister are the state鈥檚 two best runners.

鈥淚t might not be 1-2 every race 鈥� New Mexico鈥檚 talent is getting a lot higher, but we will definitely be 1-2 in a lot of races,鈥� she said.

Their debut together is Aug. 29, at Cleveland鈥檚 season-opening meet. This is where Gianna Rahmer burst 鈥� spectacularly, it should be noted 鈥� onto the state鈥檚 cross country scene, as she won that meet in 2023 as an eighth-grader herself.

鈥淚鈥檓 really excited (to become Gianna鈥檚 teammate),鈥� Isla said. 鈥淚鈥檝e been looking forward to it since the sixth grade, watching Gianna run. I鈥檓 gonna unlock things I didn鈥檛 know I could really do.鈥�

Isla has been a prodigious runner at the club level all around the country, with numerous national victories. The metro鈥檚 cross country community has been looking forward to this sibling pairing for a long while.

鈥淚 am super excited,鈥� Gianna, 16, said. She鈥檒l be a junior this season. 鈥淚t鈥檚 less running against her, more than I get to run WITH her in the same colors. Even in club, we never raced in the same age group, so I鈥檝e never really gotten a chance to race her. To be two of the fastest girls with my sister and best friend, I鈥檓 so excited.鈥�

Lost a little bit in all of this is just how formidable Eldorado is going to be as a team this fall, and the Eagles鈥� depth chart extends beyond just the Rahmer sisters.

Of course, the pressing question is, how closely the two will be matched around various courses.

鈥淚鈥檓 a little scared coming in as an eighth-grader,鈥� Isla said. 鈥淏ut I have the capability of doing well against those people. I think having (Gianna) as a mentor as definitely made this transition running at Eldorado so much easier, because she鈥檚 done it. I can always go to her. And to do cross country with her makes me so happy.鈥�

Gianna, for one, thinks her sister won鈥檛 have much trouble adapting to competing against so many older girls.

鈥淪he鈥檒l be very competitive,鈥� Gianna said. 鈥淪he鈥檚 won a lot of national races, and so I don鈥檛 think she鈥檚 much of a darkhorse. People know her. People know the Rahmer sisters.鈥�

Gianna already has nothing to prove in this sport, and yet she is very much as fiercely determined as ever. She was not healthy at all during the spring track season, but said she鈥檚 feeling great now.

鈥淚 think this is going to be a big season for me,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 expect big things for myself and my team. After track season, I have a lot to prove to myself. I have to prove that I can come back from injury and be the same person.鈥�

The question was put to both girls during a joint interview Tuesday afternoon: Who is the more competitive Rahmer sister?

鈥淥ooooh, that鈥檚 a tough one,鈥� Gianna said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e both pretty competitive.鈥�

Said Isla: 鈥淲hen it comes to running, we both want close to the same thing. We want to do well for our team. 鈥� It won鈥檛 be being competitive against her, I just want to be running with her and competing against runners from other teams. That鈥檚 where our competitiveness comes in.鈥�

Gianna said she does expect to be pushed to a certain degree by her sister, who has sprouted physically in recent years. Isla is actually about four inches taller than Gianna (5-8 to 5-4).

鈥淚 think she will mentally push me more than physically push me,鈥� Gianna Rahmer said. 鈥淚 feel very confident in my abilities and I feel very confident in her abilities. I know that my little sister is chasing me down, she鈥檚 the one that鈥檚 coming after me.鈥�

That pursuit begins at the start line Aug. 29 in Rio Rancho.

鈥淚t鈥檒l be a lot of excitement,鈥� Isla said.
