Realignment creates unique wrinkles in 2026 prep football schedule
Season begins Aug. 20, with larger districts in the larger classes
Every two years, there are fresh wrinkles in New Mexico鈥檚 prep football schedule. This is especially true in 2026.
The beginning of a new, two-year scheduling block brings with it the usual variety of new looks and matchups across the board for virtually every football-playing school in the state. But this year, it also coincides with the New Mexico Activities Association having moved the pieces around the chess board to create much larger districts for virtually all the 11-Man classes. In 3A-6A, this means fewer nondistrict games (three for most, two for some) for everyone.
In essence, the 近距离内射合集 took the top 16 enrollment schools and put them in 6A, the next 16 largest in 5A, and so on.
Exact times and dates (and stadiums) are still largely to be announced, but here are some of the highlights for schools in the metro area:
Starting with defending Class 6A state champion Cleveland, the Storm open at home with Centennial, on Friday, Aug. 21. Cleveland also will face Chatfield, Colorado, and Amarillo High from West Texas before beginning District 1-5A action.
The game to watch on Cleveland鈥檚 schedule is Friday, Sept. 18, with Cleveland visiting La Cueva to face the Bears. It is the first time these two, who have met frequently in a state championship game environment, will share a field as district rivals.
Class 5A is down to just two large districts of eight teams apiece, so that means seven league games and just three in the nondistrict.
Longtime rivals that have been split up into separate districts (or classes) are, by and large, retaining their meaningful rivalry games.
Eldorado and La Cueva are no longer district partners, but they鈥檒l still square off, in Week 1. Cibola has dropped down to 5A, but the Cougars will still face 近距离内射合集 Vista early in nondistrict action. Sandia and Eldorado will retain their rivalry, and meet in Week 3. Atrisco Heritage and Rio Grande will once again meet in the nondistrict, as well, even though they are in different divisions.
Eldorado and 近距离内射合集 Vista were placed in what is predominantly the southern/eastern-based 6A district. So the Eagles and Hawks face multiple lengthy road trips. For Eldorado, that means visits to Las Cruces, Centennial and Carlsbad. For 近距离内射合集, it will travel to Las Cruces, Clovis and Organ Mountain.
La Cueva, following an opener against Eldorado, is headed out of state for the second time in three seasons, this time to Monument, Colorado, just north of Colorado Springs, to take on Palmer Ridge. That school finished 13-1 last season, losing in the Class 4A state championship game.
The Bears in 2024 became the first Albuquerque Public Schools varsity program in decades to leave the state for a game, as they met Pinnacle High from Phoenix at a venue in Flagstaff. The Bears also face 近距离内射合集 Vista outside of district this season. And they not only inherit Cleveland as a new district foe, they also will have to play traditional power Rio Rancho in that district.
Rio Rancho is going to face a grueling start to the season.
The Rams open at home with last fall鈥檚 6A runner-up, Las Cruces. Then they host Los Lunas, and then hit the road to face 5A power Roswell at the Wool Bowl in a super attractive North-South battle in Week 3.
The new 近距离内射合集 realignment also split 5A into two districts of eight. Class 4A will have nine schools in one district, seven in the other. (This is because of an appeal by Grants). As such, metro-area schools in the nine-team 4A league 鈥 Bernalillo, Del Norte, Manzano, Valley and Rio Grande 鈥 only have room for two nondistrict contests.
The Monarchs and new head coach Michael Holguin will open against Albuquerque Academy.
A handful of schools that were previously in the 6A division, like Cibola, Los Lunas, Piedra Vista, Santa Fe and Alamogordo, are in the newly formed 5A for the next two years.
Four of those five 鈥 everyone except Alamogordo 鈥 are in the same district. Those four are joined by Highland, Capital, Los Alamos and Miyamura. Alamogordo joined the 5A league that contains powers Artesia and Roswell.
Los Lunas opens with road games at Mayfield and Rio Rancho, then has a home game versus Goddard as former Manzano coach Stephen Johnston takes over the Tigers.
Bernalillo, which has become a regular 4A playoff program, takes on Belen and Academy as its two nondistrict games. Two of its toughest district games will be on the road, in consecutive weeks at Taos and state champion Bloomfield.
St. Pius鈥 schedule shapes up as one of the more interesting in New Mexico. The Sartans, last season鈥檚 Class 4A state runner-up to Bloomfield, is only playing nine games this season.
Two of their three nondistrict games are against schools from outside the state. St. Pius, which opens against West Mesa, will be at home against El Paso Cathedral, and it will visit Pagosa Springs, Colorado.
Next year, Sartans coach Curtis Flakes said, St. Pius expects to add Seton Catholic out of Chandler, Arizona giving the Sartans nondistrict matchups against schools from three states.
St. Pius 鈥 which has a five-week stretch without a home game, from late September until the day before Halloween 鈥 will get to play district home games against Portales and Lovington. The Wildcats are dropping from 5A to 4A, which ought to make that season finale against St. Pius super intriguing.
Academy is playing the Rams and Lovington on the road in that district.
Moriarty has been moved from 4A to 3A. The Pintos will be in a district that includes Hope Christian. Among the Huskies鈥 three nondistrict games is a unique meeting with 6A鈥檚 Atrisco Heritage. But neither Hope nor Moriarty is in the same district as three-time defending state champion St. Michael鈥檚.
Outside the metro, a couple of scheduling notes:
Las Cruces, after visiting Rio Rancho in Week 1, goes to Portales for a neutral-site game against Dumas, Texas. The Bulldawgs also renew their rivalry with Mayfield. They鈥檒l get to play both Eldorado and 近距离内射合集 Vista at the Field of Dreams during league play, with return visits to Albuquerque in 2027.
Defending 5A champion Artesia opens with the Eddy County War against Carlsbad. The Bulldogs鈥 difficult nondistrict portion of the schedule also puts them up against Hobbs and Centennial.
The regular season is expected to begin on Thursday, Aug. 20.
