With the mystique of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, as the backdrop, the Little League Majors division tends to get marquee billing when it comes to youth baseball.

However, Roadrunner Little League鈥檚 Junior team is making waves in 2026, advancing through regionals to the Junior League Baseball Word Series in Taylor, Michigan. Roadrunner has a first-round bye as the Southwest representative and on Aug. 10 will face the winner of a matchup between the East regional winner and the host team from Michigan.

For the uninitiated, the Junior League helps players transition to high school with a pitching mound that is 60 feet, 6 inches from home plate and a standard 90-foot diamond. The primary difference is that the outfield is deeper at the prep level. Players can range in age from 12 to 14, according to littleleague.org, though most are on the older side.

Roadrunner manager Joe Rogillio acknowledges that the division isn鈥檛 romanticized the way Little League Majors are.

鈥淚 think there's just a lot of innocence with a 10-, 11-, 12-year-old than there is once they get to 13 or 14 just because the game becomes different, right? The way they play, their attitude, all of the above,鈥� he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not as innocent as it used to be.鈥�

But, when a team from the Land of Enchantment advances this far 鈥� it鈥檚 a big deal at any level.

鈥淚鈥檒l just put it this way: Out of the last 70 years of us doing Little League, the last time we had a winner (was) in 1956 out of Roswell, who won it all. The last (team) from New Mexico to represent the Southwest, whether it be the Williamsport or whether it be Taylor, Michigan, was Petroglyph in 2009 in Taylor, Michigan,鈥� Rogillio said.

鈥淲e will be the third team ever from New Mexico representing for the Southwest, and that's a big deal to me 鈥� We'll be the third team in 70 years to be able to make this happen.鈥�

Rogillio was an assistant when Roadrunner advanced to regionals in Majors for the first time in more than 50 years in 2023, and he took over as manager when the team returned to Waco the following year. Three of those players 鈥� Brycen Rogillio (the manager鈥檚 son), Tyriano Cordova and Harry Brunton 鈥� competed in both years and are still with this year鈥檚 Roadrunner squad. Two others, Tucker Kollar and Jake Stevens, were part of the 2024 regional team.

鈥淓very team needs a core group,鈥� Rogillio said. 鈥淎nd so the core group helps to be those leaders that help push the rest of the boys. The big thing about this team and why it's helped to go as far as they have is I think that there's no egos.

鈥淭hey all play hard for each other. They all show up for each other like brothers, and that's kind of been the key.鈥�

It鈥檚 also a seasoned group that heads to Michigan. Rogillio says that the entire team will be starting high school the same week of the Junior League World Series. This past year four players 鈥� Stevens, Cordova, Rogillio and Jeff Barker Jr. 鈥� played either junior varsity or C-team for Eldorado as eighth-graders. Brunton, meanwhile, was MVP for Hope Christian鈥檚 junior varsity. Between Little League, high school and club, the entirety of the roster played plenty of baseball leading up to this moment. Those commitments can lead to something of a juggling act, because players are allowed to participate only in 26 games between February and May, per New Mexico Activities Association regulations.

The maturity paid off in regionals, as Roadrunner bested three Texas foes by a combined score of 28-8. The previous year, Rogillio says the team came up short against an older Deming team that 鈥渨ere a bunch of men amongst boys鈥� in the state championship.

鈥淚'm just really excited to have the boys experience this great opportunity against 12 teams all over the world,鈥� Rogillio said. 鈥淭hey get to build friendships. 鈥淭hey get to experience life in a totally different way that nobody else gets to. There's only six teams left in the 近距离内射合集 States. It's a 1% chance to make it this far 鈥� It鈥檚 pretty magical.鈥�
