It was a fitting way for George Smith to celebrate his 17th birthday. The Sandia Matadors celebrated, too.

Smith scored two touchdowns in the game鈥檚 opening 3陆 minutes, and the Matadors never looked back as Sandia routed Cibola 49-6 on Thursday night as the 2026 prep football season kicked off at Wilson Stadium.

鈥淲e were kind of humming,鈥� Sandia coach Tylon Wilder said.

However, as if almost right on cue, Mother Nature stepped in to announce her presence before opening kickoff.

The game did not begin until 8:45 p.m. (and ended at 11 p.m.) due to repeated lightning strikes in the area, and in fact all three games in the metro area Thursday night were impacted by the weather to one degree or another.

West Mesa-St. Pius at Nusenda Community Stadium was postponed and rescheduled to 11 a.m. Saturday. Highland-Rio Grande at Milne Stadium didn鈥檛 begin until just after 9 p.m., and the teams played four, 10-minute quarters as opposed to 12-minute periods. The Hornets won their opener 35-6.

Sandia looked awfully impressive as it debuted a new-look roster full of prominent transfer athletes.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a great problem to have,鈥� Wilder said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 only one ball, but you try to distribute it to as many people as possible.鈥�

The Matadors spread the wealth among newcomers and returning anchors.

Smith, a junior, scored on a 48-yard run just 52 seconds into the game, and he added a 21-yard scamper on Sandia鈥檚 second drive, and the lead was 14-0 with 8:23 left in the first quarter.

鈥淚t was great,鈥� Smith said of his birthday. 鈥淚t was good to be back on the field again and I鈥檓 out here with my guys.鈥�

Even the Matadors鈥� top linebacker, Aiden Maldonado, got in on the fun, scoring on a 4-yard run near the end of the first quarter for a 21-0 bulge. Cibola answered with its only scoring drive, capped when quarterback Terry Maes scored on a 1-yard keeper.

Sandia added two more touchdowns before halftime. Matadors QB Jahleel Lewis scored on a 1-yard run, and, with 1:06 to go in the second quarter, Lewis lofted a 6-yard TD pass in the near corner to one of those newcomers, Deon Session.

The irony here was, Lewis appeared to score on the previous play, a 1-yard sneak, but Sandia was flagged for illegally helping the runner move forward. They were flagged again for this in the second half.

On the next snap, Lewis lofted a pass to Session, who reached up with his left arm and made a magnificent one-handed catch, getting a foot down before going out of bounds, and the Matadors could do little wrong with a 35-6 bulge at halftime.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 what we鈥檙e gonna do this year. We have a lot of weapons,鈥� Smith said. 鈥淟ast year, maybe you could say we didn鈥檛 have as many weapons, but this year we do and we鈥檙e gonna use everyone to our advantage.鈥�

Gad Harris, like George Smith one of the mainstays coming back from last year (although Smith himself transferred from Robertson the previous year), added a 4-yard touchdown run, and J鈥檝en Smith, like Session a transfer from Atrisco Heritage, closed out the scoring with a 7-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter.

鈥淲e鈥檝e got a lot of great athletes, and the key is to be creative to get everyone the ball,鈥� Sandia coach Tylon Wilder said. 鈥淚f you don鈥檛 give all these kids the ball 鈥� things start happening bad.鈥�

The Matadors demonstrated Thursday just how difficult it will be to defend them.

鈥淲e鈥檝e got the transfers, we鈥檝e got Deon, J鈥檝en, we got Aiden, we have a bunch of dudes this year,鈥� George Smith said. 鈥淲e can just spread the love.鈥�

HIGHLAND 35, RIO GRANDE 6: At Milne, junior running back William Anchondo gained nearly 200 yards with three touchdowns, and the Hornets opened with a solid victory over the Ravens.

Jasper Groves and Andres Acosta also reached the end zone for Highland, and Acosta added two, 2-point conversions.
