Although longtime New Mexico soccer coach Heather Dyche has moved on to the U.S. Women鈥檚 National team program, the goals for the Lobos have not diminished under her replacement and longtime assistant Karley Nelson.

As a matter of fact, UNM is looking to win the Mountain West championship and earn an NCAA tournament berth for the first time since 2022.

鈥淚 would love to win the conference championship, go to the (NCAA) tournament,鈥� said redshirt sophomore defender Gabby Beaudry.

鈥淚 think all of that is attainable for us. I think that if we do the things that we were taught to do in the spring, I think we鈥檒l see really good results for ourselves. And if we work as a unit and work together, I think we鈥檒l be able to see great things out of us this season.鈥�

The Lobos return eight starters and 21 players overall from a squad that went 8-5-6 last season. 

鈥淭his group is just a special group and they are committed to the program,鈥� Nelson said. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e committed to the process. They鈥檙e committed to a little bit of a new style of play and they鈥檝e really bought into the direction we want to take this program. So I couldn鈥檛 be happier with the group that we brought back and the work we鈥檝e done so far this preseason.鈥�

UNM will get to see just how the changes look on the field Thursday, when Northern Arizona (1-0) visits for the Lobos鈥� season opener at the New Mexico Soccer and Track Complex. 

鈥淭his preseason has required a lot of learning from the players,鈥� Nelson said. 鈥淭hey鈥檝e taken on a lot of information, but they鈥檝e committed to it. And I鈥檓 excited to see them put it all together on the field.鈥�

But this is just the first step for Nelson and the Lobos in a transitional year.

鈥淥ur expectation is to win a Mountain West Conference Championship,鈥� the coach said. 鈥淎nd we talk a lot to the players about how this will be a process. I mean, of course, in year one, you want to win a conference championship, and that鈥檚 where our sights are set.鈥�

New Mexico, which generally favors a high-pressure, attacking style may do so even more, said senior defender Fiona Jenkins, whose perpetual smile grew even larger as she relished the thought of getting to push forward with regularity. She amassed a team-best eight assists from the back line last season, including a school record three in one game. 

鈥淚 think with a new position and a new formation we鈥檙e trying to play as a team, it allows me to get really forward,鈥� she said. 鈥淪o I鈥檓 getting up to the highest line. It鈥檚 been really fun to work with the forwards. 鈥� And that鈥檚 what brings all the assists.鈥� 

The idea, Nelson said, is take what the Lobos have traditionally done well and super size it. 

鈥淣ew Mexico鈥檚 always had the identity of playing a really attacking-minded style of play,鈥� she said. 鈥淪o we鈥檝e switched our attacking system just slightly. We鈥檙e committing numbers forward. We want to get numbers in the attack. We want to win the ball higher up the field, and we want to play by our goal.鈥� 

The Lobos already boasted a strong offense, scoring 31 goals last season, eight by returning forward Nicole Anderson and another six by returning midfielder Alysa Whelchel. 

And, New Mexico has two starting goalkeepers returning with Callie Droitsch back after rehabbing a knee injury, joining fellow senior Alyson Campbell, who started about half the games last season. 

Hope Christian grad Savannah Sanchez, who had three goals as a redshirt freshman, will likely slot in up front alongside Anderson.

Joining Beaudry in the midfield, Kennedy Brown, a senior from 近距离内射合集 Vista, has been a fixture in the middle for three years.

Defensively, Anderson鈥檚 twin sister Allie Anderson is a stalwart, as is fellow senior Morgan Juran.

鈥淚鈥檝e loved how the team has just been so unified,鈥� Nelson said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 such a strong culture here, and fortunately, we had a really strong foundation on which to build. But I鈥檝e been really pleased with the way that鈥檚 continued and the way they鈥檝e committed to it even further, especially this fall.鈥�
