An Albuquerque-based company is putting New Mexico wine on more of the map.

VARA Winery & Distillery, which operates a distillery in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque and tasting rooms in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, is now offering its sparkling wine products in New York and New Jersey, the company said this week.

The winery finalized the deals with wine importer and distributor Wine Affairs, bringing its VARA Brut and VARA Brut Ros茅 to dozens of retailers across the two states. Efforts are underway to expand that distribution to restaurants, bars, hotels and 鈥渁nywhere that has a license to serve or sell wine鈥� in the coming months, said VARA CEO Jon Murray.

The expansion brings VARA鈥檚 distribution footprint to 13 states, including New Mexico, California, Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Ohio, Texas, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin.

鈥淓ntering the Northeast is an exciting next step for VARA,鈥� Murray said. 鈥淣ew York in particular has long been an important market we鈥檝e hoped to enter, given its deep appreciation for wine, food and culture.鈥�

New Mexico also has a long history in wine. Unbeknownst to most, the Land of Enchantment is the nation鈥檚 oldest wine-producing region. Spanish missionaries planted grapes along the Rio Grande and began making wine in 1629 鈥� predating the start of California鈥檚 wine production by 140 years.

The Gruets, a well-known French winemaking family, also launched their first American operations in New Mexico in 1989. Laurent Gruet, a third-generation winemaker, joined VARA in 2020.

The company expects its distribution growth to continue in the coming year, according to a news release. Until then, Murray said he is 鈥渢hrilled鈥� about the East Coast expansion and hopes it brings more exposure to New Mexico wine and the 鈥渉eritage and character that make us unique.鈥�
