1. What is the top priority in your District and how would you address it as a county commissioner?
As a commissioner, I would support expanding law enforcement capacity鈥攂uilding a larger, well-resourced department that can effectively cover areas including Albuquerque鈥攚hile also increasing behavioral health services and prevention programs. Given the district鈥檚 mix of dense urban areas and the East Mountains, this ensures equitable, responsive public safety across communities.
2. Under what circumstances, if any, would you support a tax increase? And what types, if any, would you support?
I would only support a tax increase if it is transparent, voter-approved, and tied directly to measurable outcomes like public safety or infrastructure. Any increase must be temporary or clearly justified, with strong oversight to ensure funds are used efficiently.
3. What do you think should be the county's top three capital project priorities?
public safety infrastructure, behavioral health facilities, and road improvements. I emphasize balancing investments鈥攕upporting Albuquerque鈥檚 service demands while ensuring the East Mountains receive adequate road maintenance, fire protection, and access to essential county infrastructure suited to its rural needs.
4. What differentiates you from your opponents?
I bring real-world experience and a results-driven mindset. I focus on practical solutions, not politics, and I鈥檝e proven to be a boots-on-the-ground, hands-on and accessible leader. I鈥檓 committed to accountability, transparency, and delivering measurable results that improve quality of life across both urban Albuquerque and the rural communities of District 5.
5. What do you believe are some of the largest issues facing Bernalillo County?
Public safety, homelessness, substance abuse, and economic stagnation are major challenges. The East Mountains face wildfire risk, limited water infrastructure, septic dependence, road access issues, and slower emergency response. Albuquerque struggles with crime, housing affordability, transit gaps, aging infrastructure, economic diversification, and education outcomes. Shared challenges include drought, growth management, and inequality.
6. What role, if any, should the county commission play in advising the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office on matters related to public safety?
The commission should provide oversight, funding priorities, and policy guidance while respecting operational independence. Collaboration is key ensuring the Sheriff鈥檚 Office has resources and technical force multipliers, while maintaining accountability and alignment with community needs.
7. What are your ideas for improving conditions for both employees and inmates at the Metropolitan Detention Center?
I would support increased staffing, better training, and improved working conditions for employees. For inmates, expanding mental health services, rehabilitation programs, and reentry planning will reduce recidivism and improve overall facility safety.
8. How would you work to improve the economy in Bernalillo County?
I would focus on supporting small businesses, attracting new industries鈥攅specially tech鈥攁nd investing in workforce development. Bernalillo County is home to some of the brightest tech minds, and we should leverage that talent by partnering with institutions like University of New Mexico and Sandia National Laboratories.
9. What strategies do you have for reducing homelessness? Please be specific.
I support a housing-first approach combined with mental health and addiction services. This includes expanding transitional housing, increasing access to treatment, and coordinating with nonprofits to provide long-term support and job placement services.
