1. What are three concrete actions you would take to address crime in the county?

-Strategic deployment of personnel, use of technology, involving a strong police presence, based upon data analysis, to targeted areas, for suppression of criminal activity.

-Initiation of community and school based violence reduction/intervention programs.

-Initiatives to address/provide services/treatment to undeserved communities, those suffering from addictions/mental health issues.

2. What differentiates you from your opponent?

I am a professional Law Enforcement Officer and Administrator, with 47 years of accomplished service at the City, County, and State level. I am a trained, professional Administrator, as evidenced by my Educational background, and prior work experiences. I will address the disturbing pattern of Criminal misconduct by Department personnel.

3. What do you think should be the relationship between the Albuquerque Police Department and the Sheriff鈥檚 Office and how would you foster that relationship?

A strong, working, and supportive partnership, will be developed, and maintained, via regular and recurring communication and strategic meetings, involving joint strategies for the prevention, detection, and suppression of crime, shared use of technology, resources, equipment, and training.

4. What do you think are the biggest issues concerning crime and public safety in the unincorporated parts of Bernalillo County?

Illicit drug activities, and related criminal activity-property crimes, theft, burglaries, violent crime-primarily related to the epidemic proliferation of fentanyl. A strong, responsive, proactive police presence, coupled with enforcement initiatives, will be directed to the unincorporated areas. Purposeful, responsive, engaged, community based policing initiatives will be undertaken.

5. Should local law enforcement cooperate and/or assist federal immigration agents?

No. Immigration enforcement is within the authority of the Federal Government. Such is prohibited by County Ordinance. I support the ordinance prohibiting such and related activities. I would note that anyone engaging in criminal behavior will be arrested and held accountable, irrespective of immigration status.

6. If elected, what would you do to keep guns out of the hands of juveniles?

Strategies to control juvenile access to firearms-legislation, police enforcement, are best combined with strategies aimed at changing the motivation to carry firearms-Protection, Desire for Revenge. School and community based violence intervention programs have dramatic results relative to stopping conflict situations, gang activities, criminal behavior, and will be implemented.

7. What, if any, changes would you make to the structure and operations of the Sheriff鈥檚 Department? Please explain.

After review, evaluation and assessment of Departmental personnel, processes, and resources, and practice, activities will be utilized to place the most qualified persons in appropriate roles, for the achievement of our goals and objectives. The disturbing and recurring pattern of Criminal misconduct by some personnel, will be immediately addressed.
