What steps do you believe should be taken to improve New Mexico's economic competitiveness?

I will double down on site readiness. We need to invest in the businesses investing in us, and prepare infrastructure so it鈥檚 ready. Establish the Office of Small Business to implement a one-stop-shop to streamline the permitting process and make it easier to access capital.

New Mexico is the only state that does not pay its legislators a salary, though lawmakers do receive per diem payments and can qualify for a legislative pension. Do you support or oppose the proposed constitutional amendment calling for a new legislative salary tied to the median family income level?

I support a fair legislative salary, so that we can increase the perspectives of working people in our legislature 鈥 while keeping the system transparent, accountable, and worthy of public trust.

With New Mexico now the nation鈥檚 second-highest oil producing state, would you support or oppose changes to the state鈥檚 gross receipts tax and personal income tax structures? Please explain.

I support targeted tax reform, not across-the-board cuts: expand the Child Tax Credit and Working Families Tax Credit, and reduce GRT so we can lower housing and healthcare costs. Oil revenues should help drive diversification and investment, protect funding for schools, infrastructure, and long-term savings.

Would you support or oppose imposing water use limits on data centers? In addition, would you generally support or oppose banning data centers in New Mexico?

I will bring opportunities to New Mexico responsibly by putting families and consumers at the forefront so we don鈥檛 bear the burden of industries straining resources. I will enact guardrails that require industries to use sustainable water practices, like closed loop systems and safe decontamination, to protect our fresh water.

Amid a recent string of high-profile criminal cases involving juvenile defendants, do you support or oppose imposing stricter sentences for adolescents convicted of certain violent crimes?

My priority will be to prevent children from getting into a life of crime in the first place with early, stronger interventions. For juvenile defendants who commit violent crimes, we must have accountability and rehabilitation so we stop cycles of crime.

Would you support or oppose a ban on selling certain types of firearms, including semiautomatic firearms and machine guns?

I will work to pass the Stop Illegal Gun Trade Act to provide oversight on restricted weapons and accountability to gun vendors. In Congress, my record supporting common-sense gun safety legislation was unambiguous.

Do you support or oppose using New Mexico鈥檚 National Guard to assist local law enforcement with issues related to public safety?

I will work with local officials to combat violent crime, and ensure our National Guard can be helpful when needed. Right now, there鈥檚 a national effort to abuse the National Guard, and I plan to prohibit other states鈥 troops from being mobilized to New Mexico without the governor鈥檚 permission.

What changes would you propose to improve New Mexico鈥檚 Children, Youth and Families Department?

CYFD needs a complete overhaul. On day one I will appoint a qualified secretary to change the way business is done at the department, recruiting foster parents, social workers, and caseworkers, while working toward an independent commission to provide consistency for children. Kids are literally dying and it's unacceptable.

What steps should be taken to bring New Mexico into compliance with the 2018 court ruling that found New Mexico is failing to provide a sufficient education to all students?

We are required to provide a quality education for all students, it鈥檚 the right thing to do. I will invest in early reading and math tutoring, making schools hubs for everything children need to succeed: nutrition, health, and community, and sustained investment in rural, Tribal, bilingual, and special education.

New Mexico has seen a string of devastating wildfires and floods in recent years. What policy steps, if any, should the state take to address these natural disasters?

We need year-round prevention and faster recovery. My experience managing fires at Interior includes investing in forest and watershed restoration, strengthening emergency response and evacuation planning, hardening roads and water systems, and delivering quicker aid so rural, Tribal, and fire- and flood-hit communities can rebuild safely and reduce future risk.

Would you support or oppose a paid family and medical leave program that would require most employees and employers to pay into a state-run fund?

As governor, I will secure Paid Family Medical Leave so New Mexicans can focus on their family. New Mexicans need to know that they are able to care for their loved ones without worrying about losing their pay.

Have you or your business, if you are a business owner, ever been the subject of any state or federal tax liens?

Yes, I immediately resolved the lien when I was made aware that it existed.

Have you ever been arrested for, charged with, or convicted of drunken driving, any misdemeanor or any felony in New Mexico or any other state? If so, explain.

Yes, I have been transparent about my journey with alcohol addiction, and am proud of the 35 years of sobriety I have achieved.

Have you ever been involved in a personal or business bankruptcy proceeding?

No.
