What steps do you believe should be taken to improve New Mexico's economic competitiveness?
Create a vibrant economy by eliminating personal income tax, eliminating gross receipts tax on retail sales, and reducing property tax. Every economic development effort should focus on creating sustainable, well-paying jobs. New Mexico must invest, rather than simply spend. Adopt all licensure compacts for medical professionals.
New Mexico is the only state that does not pay its legislators a salary, though lawmakers do receive per diem payments and can qualify for a legislative pension. Do you support or oppose the proposed constitutional amendment calling for a new legislative salary tied to the median family income level?
Yes, I support a legislative salary tied to longer sessions and legislative term limits. I also support more staff for legislators and more involvement from subject-matter experts. The salary should replace the legislative retirement pension.
With New Mexico now the nation鈥檚 second-highest oil producing state, would you support or oppose changes to the state鈥檚 gross receipts tax and personal income tax structures? Please explain.
I support eliminating personal income tax. I support eliminating GRT on retail sales. I support efforts to eliminate GRT pyramid-ing. I support reducing property tax to make housing more affordable. All of these incentivize and reward working people and small businesses.
Would you support or oppose imposing water use limits on data centers? In addition, would you generally support or oppose banning data centers in New Mexico?
I support requiring data centers to build their own water supply through desalination, to build their own electrical supply, and to invest in co-generation. We should enforce uniform water rules on data centers. I do not support a blanket ban.
Amid a recent string of high-profile criminal cases involving juvenile defendants, do you support or oppose imposing stricter sentences for adolescents convicted of certain violent crimes?
I support stricter sentences for adolescents convicted of violent crimes. I support requiring those adolescents to serve the entirety of their sentences.
Would you support or oppose a ban on selling certain types of firearms, including semiautomatic firearms and machine guns?
I do not support a blanket ban on sales of certain types of firearms, but I encourage debate on precautions for their sale. New Mexico should not codify any law which conflicts with the Second Amendment. New Mexico should not impede responsible arms ownership for law-abiding citizens.
Do you support or oppose using New Mexico鈥檚 National Guard to assist local law enforcement with issues related to public safety?
I support using the resources of the New Mexico National Guard in support of local law enforcement.
What changes would you propose to improve New Mexico鈥檚 Children, Youth and Families Department?
Appoint a Secretary with prosecution experience. Take action to release CYFD from the handcuffs of the Kevin S. settlement. Stop unnecessary ideological brainwashing so that good CYFD employees stay there. Move away from the singular goal of 鈥渞eunification鈥 and instead center all decisions on 鈥渂est interests of the child.鈥
What steps should be taken to bring New Mexico into compliance with the 2018 court ruling that found New Mexico is failing to provide a sufficient education to all students?
Require school districts to spend a certain percentage on teachers, rather than administrators or other bloat. Slice and dice test score statistics so extra help can be effectively targeted. Pay effective teachers more if they move to less successful schools. Funds should follow families.
New Mexico has seen a string of devastating wildfires and floods in recent years. What policy steps, if any, should the state take to address these natural disasters?
Enter into information-sharing agreements with the federal US Forest Service. Allow PNM and electrical co-ops to raise money and use money to bury electrical lines. Enter into cross-jurisdictional agreements now so that municipal firefighters can be effectively deployed to assist with wildfires.
Would you support or oppose a paid family and medical leave program that would require most employees and employers to pay into a state-run fund?
I do not support a state-run leave program. I support incentivizing employers to develop their own programs.
Have you or your business, if you are a business owner, ever been the subject of any state or federal tax liens?
No
Have you ever been arrested for, charged with, or convicted of drunken driving, any misdemeanor or any felony in New Mexico or any other state? If so, explain.
No.
Have you ever been involved in a personal or business bankruptcy proceeding?
No
