What steps do you believe should be taken to improve New Mexico's economic competitiveness?

Strengthen competitiveness by attracting high-growth industries like clean energy, film, and health tech; expanding workforce training and apprenticeships; removing unnecessary degree barriers; supporting small businesses; and investing in housing and infrastructure. Pair this with targeted tax relief for working families to boost income, labor participation, and long-term economic growth.

New Mexico is the only state that does not pay its legislators a salary, though lawmakers do receive per diem payments and can qualify for a legislative pension. Do you support or oppose the proposed constitutional amendment calling for a new legislative salary tied to the median family income level?

Support. Tying legislative pay to median family income ensures fairness, transparency, and accountability while broadening who can serve. A salary allows working families, not just the wealthy or retired, to participate in government, strengthening representation and making the legislature more reflective of New Mexico.

With New Mexico now the nation鈥檚 second-highest oil producing state, would you support or oppose changes to the state鈥檚 gross receipts tax and personal income tax structures? Please explain.

Support targeted reforms, not sweeping cuts. Continue GRT reform by eliminating taxes on essential services like healthcare, provide income tax relief for working families, and eliminate state income taxes for seniors 65+. Use oil revenues to diversify the economy, attract talent, and deliver lasting tax fairness.

Would you support or oppose imposing water use limits on data centers? In addition, would you generally support or oppose banning data centers in New Mexico?

Support reasonable water-use limits to protect scarce resources. Oppose an outright ban. Instead, require data centers to meet strict conservation standards, use recycled water where possible, and align with economic development goals so New Mexico can attract jobs while safeguarding long-term water sustainability.

Amid a recent string of high-profile criminal cases involving juvenile defendants, do you support or oppose imposing stricter sentences for adolescents convicted of certain violent crimes?

Support accountability for serious violent offenses, but prioritize rehabilitation. Expand mental health treatment, addiction services, and diversion programs, while modernizing the Children鈥檚 Code. Ensure secure placement when necessary, paired with intensive therapy and reentry support, so youth are held accountable while given a real path to reform and reduce recidivism.

Would you support or oppose a ban on selling certain types of firearms, including semiautomatic firearms and machine guns?

Support banning machine guns while upholding the Second Amendment and responsible gun ownership. Increase penalties for felons in possession. Focus on enforcing existing laws, strengthening background checks, targeting traffickers and straw purchasers, and keeping firearms out of the hands of those who pose a danger to others in our communities.

Do you support or oppose using New Mexico鈥檚 National Guard to assist local law enforcement with issues related to public safety?

Support limited, strategic use of the National Guard to assist local law enforcement during emergencies or capacity shortages. Any deployment should be clearly defined, temporary, and coordinated with local agencies to support public safety without replacing or overextending civilian law enforcement. More police on the streets is the real solution.

What changes would you propose to improve New Mexico鈥檚 Children, Youth and Families Department?

Fully reform CYFD by splitting it into child welfare and juvenile justice agencies, improving accountability and public reporting, expanding early intervention and mental health services, stabilizing and increasing the workforce, strengthening foster care, and aligning reforms with federal benchmarks to ensure consistent case management, child safety, and long-term accountability

What steps should be taken to bring New Mexico into compliance with the 2018 court ruling that found New Mexico is failing to provide a sufficient education to all students?

Fully implement the Yazzie/Martinez ruling by setting clear achievement goals, investing in early literacy and math, expanding high-impact tutoring, increasing teacher support, and ensuring equitable, culturally responsive resources for at-risk students. Strengthen accountability with transparent metrics and intervention in underperforming schools. Quality education should never depend on zip code.

New Mexico has seen a string of devastating wildfires and floods in recent years. What policy steps, if any, should the state take to address these natural disasters?

Invest in forest management, expand the workforce for fuel thinning, watershed restoration, and wildfire prevention. Modernize infrastructure and flood control, expand emergency response capacity, and support resilient rebuilding. Coordinate with federal, tribal, and local partners while prioritizing water conservation and climate-adaptive planning to protect communities long-term, reduce future disaster risks.

Would you support or oppose a paid family and medical leave program that would require most employees and employers to pay into a state-run fund?

I Support a paid family and medical leave program if it鈥檚 fiscally responsible and minimizes burdens on small businesses. A shared, state-run system can help workers care for loved ones without losing income while improving workforce retention, as long as it鈥檚 designed to be sustainable and practical.

Have you or your business, if you are a business owner, ever been the subject of any state or federal tax liens?

I have never personally had a tax lien. Approximately 35 years ago, a business I held shares in, along with my brother, had a tax lien filed against it.

Have you ever been arrested for, charged with, or convicted of drunken driving, any misdemeanor or any felony in New Mexico or any other state? If so, explain.

Yes. When I was 18, I was arrested for a misdemeanor charge that was dismissed.

Have you ever been involved in a personal or business bankruptcy proceeding?

No
