What steps do you believe should be taken to improve New Mexico's economic competitiveness?

New Mexico should streamline permitting, modernize infrastructure, and invest in workforce training aligned with employers, as well as simplify the gross receipts tax, support small businesses, and expand housing. We should responsibly leverage energy revenues to diversify into technology, manufacturing, and clean energy, creating high-quality jobs and long-term economic growth.

New Mexico is the only state that does not pay its legislators a salary, though lawmakers do receive per diem payments and can qualify for a legislative pension. Do you support or oppose the proposed constitutional amendment calling for a new legislative salary tied to the median family income level?

I support the constitutional amendment on a legislative salary. Tying legislative pay to median income makes the Legislature more representative, allowing working families- not just the independently wealthy, to serve. Any change must include strong transparency, accountability, and clear standards to maintain public trust.

With New Mexico now the nation鈥檚 second-highest oil producing state, would you support or oppose changes to the state鈥檚 gross receipts tax and personal income tax structures? Please explain.

I support targeted reforms such as simplifying the gross receipts tax by reducing tax pyramiding and broadening the base, while not increasing taxes on necessities, like groceries and healthcare. Income taxes should remain competitive and fair. Energy revenue should be used to stabilize budgets, reduce volatility, and investment in diversification.

Would you support or oppose imposing water use limits on data centers? In addition, would you generally support or oppose banning data centers in New Mexico?

I support reasonable water-use limits, especially in water-scarce areas. I oppose a data center ban, and support responsible siting with local input. I believe in transparency and public participation, and support hiring local union workers to feed their families, leading to workforce development and a pipelinefor apprentices.

Amid a recent string of high-profile criminal cases involving juvenile defendants, do you support or oppose imposing stricter sentences for adolescents convicted of certain violent crimes?

I support accountability with age-appropriate consequences. For the most serious violent crimes, I support measured sentencing changes paired with strong intervention, mental health services, and rehabilitation programs to reduce recidivism and give young people a real path forward.

Would you support or oppose a ban on selling certain types of firearms, including semiautomatic firearms and machine guns?

I support banning dangerous weapons such as assault rifles and machine guns, and strengthening background checks and safe storage laws. I support evidence-based policies that reduce gun violence while respecting responsible gun ownership. I am very concerned about guns in schools; we need to support educators鈥 and students鈥 safety.

Do you support or oppose using New Mexico鈥檚 National Guard to assist local law enforcement with issues related to public safety?

I support limited, temporary and clearly defined use of the National Guard during emergencies or serious capacity gaps, with proper training, coordination, and civilian oversight. The National Guard should support, not replace, local law enforcement.鈥

What changes would you propose to improve New Mexico鈥檚 Children, Youth and Families Department?

I support separating Juvenile Justice Services from CYFD to improve focus and accountability, and strengthen recruitment and retention with competitive pay and incentives. We should prioritize qualified, degreed professionals across relevant fields, reduce caseloads, improve training, and increase oversight and transparency to better protect children and support families.鈥

What steps should be taken to bring New Mexico into compliance with the 2018 court ruling that found New Mexico is failing to provide a sufficient education to all students?

New Mexico must focus on fully funding evidence-based programs targeted at low-income, native, ELL students and students with disabilities. Programs should include extended learning time, culturally relevant curriculum, and high-quality special education. Increased educator pay and retention and accountability tied to measurable student outcomes should also be prioritized.鈥

New Mexico has seen a string of devastating wildfires and floods in recent years. What policy steps, if any, should the state take to address these natural disasters?

New Mexico should invest in vegetation management, watershed restoration, and resilient infrastructure. The state must strengthen emergency response, land-use planning and communication and coordination with utilities and local emergency managers. The state should also leverage federal funding and regional coordination to reduce risk, protect communities, and speed recovery after disasters.

Would you support or oppose a paid family and medical leave program that would require most employees and employers to pay into a state-run fund?

I support a balanced program that provides workers with paid leave while minimizing impacts on small businesses through phased implementation, reasonable caps, and shared contributions. Employers that already provide generous PTO programs should not be required to participate in a state-run program, nor should their employees be required to pay into a state-run fund.

Have you or your business, if you are a business owner, ever been the subject of any state or federal tax liens?

I have never been subject to a state or federal tax lien.

Have you ever been arrested for, charged with, or convicted of drunken driving, any misdemeanor or any felony in New Mexico or any other state? If so, explain.

In 2006, I was convicted of driving under the influence. I successfully completed all court-ordered requirements and have had no subsequent offenses.

Have you ever been involved in a personal or business bankruptcy proceeding?

In my twenties, during the Great Recession, I filed for bankruptcy- a difficult but necessary step.
