What steps do you believe should be taken to improve New Mexico's economic competitiveness?
We are too dependent on oil as the basis for our economy and need to diversify. We need to rethink our tax structure, support entrepreneurs and small businesses whose dollars stay in NM, structure education and training programs to align with industry, and fund paid internship/apprenticeship opportunities.
New Mexico is the only state that does not pay its legislators a salary, though lawmakers do receive per diem payments and can qualify for a legislative pension. Do you support or oppose the proposed constitutional amendment calling for a new legislative salary tied to the median family income level?
Support. The median family income level is a reasonable baseline, and it's fair. As NM families increase their incomes, so would legislators. It incentivizes legislators to put NM working families first. It's time for NM to stop being the only state in the nation that doesn't pay legislators.
With New Mexico now the nation鈥檚 second-highest oil producing state, would you support or oppose changes to the state鈥檚 gross receipts tax and personal income tax structures? Please explain.
Support. NM needs to rethink our tax structures. There are too many outside entities profiting off of NM resources and not paying their fair share of taxes. Furthermore, the gross receipts structure seems to put undue burden on business. Most recently this has come up with doctors.
Would you support or oppose imposing water use limits on data centers? In addition, would you generally support or oppose banning data centers in New Mexico?
Yes. There are communities in NM that still don't have access to safe drinking water. I'd support a moratorium on data centers until we figure out the regulations needed to protect people. Let's take care of people first instead of allowing billionaires to extract resources with no clear economic benefit.
Amid a recent string of high-profile criminal cases involving juvenile defendants, do you support or oppose imposing stricter sentences for adolescents convicted of certain violent crimes?
For extreme offenses like homicide this may be necessary. However, imposing stricter prison sentences across the board for juvenile offenders does little to reduce recidivism, and for younger adolescents often only serves as a training ground for breaking the law again. Juveniles are easier to rehabilitate than adults.
Would you support or oppose a ban on selling certain types of firearms, including semiautomatic firearms and machine guns?
I am a firearm owner and a supporter of the second amendment and yes, I support reasonable restrictions on firearm sales. Semiautomatics and machine guns are considered "dangerous and unusual weapons not typically used for lawful self-defense".
Do you support or oppose using New Mexico鈥檚 National Guard to assist local law enforcement with issues related to public safety?
I do not support using the Guard to assist federal ICE agents with civil immigration actions and violating our right to due process. If there is a legitimate community safety need related to natural disaster response and emergency management, or countering illegal drug activity, I would support that.
What changes would you propose to improve New Mexico鈥檚 Children, Youth and Families Department?
We need an independent commission with oversight authority and adequate financial resources to oversee the department. We need specific data-driven accountability standards. The department itself needs sufficient resources to achieve the mission of Child Protective Services to keep children safe and respond appropriately to the individual needs of children.
What steps should be taken to bring New Mexico into compliance with the 2018 court ruling that found New Mexico is failing to provide a sufficient education to all students?
We need to invest in bi-literacy initiatives that give our students a competitive advantage in a bilingual state like NM. Investments in graduation pathways and meaningful Individualized Education Programs for underserved students, culturally/linguistically relevant learning opportunities, school-based behavioral health initiatives, and meaningful teacher retention efforts and investments.
New Mexico has seen a string of devastating wildfires and floods in recent years. What policy steps, if any, should the state take to address these natural disasters?
In our day to day, we can use prescribed burns, make buildings fire resistant, implement sustainable land use management strategies. We should listen to the experts in the field regarding strategies to consider. For the long term, we need to tackle root causes of these events, like climate change.
Would you support or oppose a paid family and medical leave program that would require most employees and employers to pay into a state-run fund?
Yes. 14 states have PFML. The legislation that almost passed in NM also required the state to contribute funds. PFML improves employee retention and provides financial stability when employees have a child, a serious illness, or care for sick family membe
Have you or your business, if you are a business owner, ever been the subject of any state or federal tax liens?
No
Have you ever been arrested for, charged with, or convicted of drunken driving, any misdemeanor or any felony in New Mexico or any other state? If so, explain.
No
Have you ever been involved in a personal or business bankruptcy proceeding?
No
