Two Albuquerque breweries recently collected medals at the North American Brewers Association International Beer and Cider Awards.

Canteen Brewhouse took home a bronze medal for High Voltage in the India Pale Lager/Cold IPA category, while Boxing Bear earned bronze in the Helles Lager category for its Golden Gloves Premium Lager. The competition took place from June 3-5 in Idaho Falls, Idaho, where beer submissions were scored by judges according to style (Full guidelines can be found at ).

For Canteen head brewer Will Moorman, the recognition was an affirmation of quality.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a pretty prestigious competition,鈥� he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not at the level of the Great American Beer Fest or World Beer Cup, but if you look at the breweries that compete, there are some absolute world-class brewers here. I鈥檇 say for us, it鈥檚 a sign that we are bringing Canteen back to the high level of quality that Albuquerque expects. We鈥檙e super excited to just be in the conversation again.鈥�

Moorman previously worked at Flix Brewhouse for more than eight years, most recently as director of brewing operations. After taking a year hiatus from the industry, he took the position at Canteen last year.

鈥淐oming back into the brewing biz after taking a year out has been nice, and there鈥檚 been a lot of learning that I鈥檝e done since I started with Canteen back in August,鈥� he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been a quest to get to the point where we鈥檙e producing award-winning beers again, and we鈥檙e starting to see that pay off.鈥�

After capturing one of three golds for Boxing Bear at the NABA Awards last year, Golden Gloves is a repeat winner 鈥� albeit with a new name after it medaled under the Helles Good moniker last year. According to head brewer Eddie Dominguez, an Arizona native who has been with Boxing Bear since 2021, it was a collaborative effort.

鈥淚t鈥檚 one that the whole team had a lot of input on, trying to achieve the flavor profile we wanted, making it easy to drink and making something as difficult as a lager is. You can鈥檛 hide any flaws. You can鈥檛 just throw a bunch of hops at it and make it better,鈥� Dominguez said.

鈥淚t鈥檚 really a naked beer that has to shine through. The fact that we have awards for that beer is just super awesome. We know that it鈥檚 a very clean and great drinking beer.鈥�

High Voltage is a seasonal offering at Canteen that Moorman expects to make regular appearances in the brewery lineup. Listed as a West Coast IPA on the Canteen website, Moorman says the beer can also be categorized as a cold IPA.

鈥淭he lines are getting blurred further and further as this becomes more of the approach with producing these. Styles are all over the place,鈥� Moorman said.

鈥淲hen it comes to a cold IPA versus an IPA, what we鈥檙e talking about is the difference in process. We鈥檙e using different kinds of yeast 鈥� lager yeast versus ale yeast. This uses lager yeast at a warm temperature to help create a really crisp body and let the hop shine through as opposed to some of the malt character.鈥�

Meanwhile, Boxing Bear鈥檚 Golden Gloves is a German-style lager, which means it uses pilsner as the base malt. It鈥檚 also a little on the labor-intensive side, as it takes about a month for a fermentation cycle, Dominguez says. The beer was initially introduced last year, but in this case, the 鈥済loves鈥� are going to stay on for the foreseeable future as a house beer. The recipe was initially developed by brewer Rob Palmer 鈥� his first creation for Boxing Bear.

鈥淲e all loved it so much that we started entering it in other competitions and getting high remarks and got a couple of awards out of it. And as brewers, we love to drink lagers,鈥� Dominguez said. 鈥淪o it鈥檚 like a little bit of a selfish decision to make it a house beer, but it鈥檚 definitely become a lot more popular.鈥�
