Albuquerque astronaut Mike Mullane stars in ‘Once Upon A Time in Space’
The four-part documentary explores the personal stories behind space exploration, from the shuttle era to commercial spaceflight
When Richard M. “Mike” Mullane looks up to the vast New Mexico sky, he feels the same love and wonderment he felt as a child.
Though he was born in Texas, Mullane grew up in Albuquerque and graduated from St. Pius X High School in 1963. He later went to the ϼ States Military Academy at West Point and then the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology.
He eventually became a NASA astronaut and flew on three space shuttle missions.
“I’ve often said that one of the reasons I’m an astronaut is because my mom and dad settled here in Albuquerque when I was 10 years old,” Mullane says. “This would’ve been back in the 1955 era, and Albuquerque is still pretty small. We lived on the edge of the desert, which, by the way, at that time was the Wyoming and Candleria area. Nothing between that and the mountains.
“It was easy for me just to walk outside my house and be in basically a planetarium. The skies were so dark. I got to participate in the early space program in a way you’d never be able to participate in a big city. I could go out there and see these early satellites coming over, Sputnik, Echo, a few of those early ones. It was a thrilling time to go out there and see those come over. Albuquerque’s night skies way back then, they helped push me into space as an astronaut.”
Mullane is featured in the PBS four-part series “Once Upon A Time in Space,” which premieres at 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, on New Mexico PBS, channel 5.1. A new episode airs at 8 p.m. Tuesday through Aug. 4.
According to PBS, the series tells the stories behind the exploration of space and examines the personal experiences of astronauts, cosmonauts, ground-based participants, and the loved ones left on Earth.
It traces significant landmarks in spacefaring history, from the birth of the shuttle and the pioneering Space Station Mir to the rise of commercial spaceflight.
Featured alongside Mullane are NASA astronauts Charlie Bolden, Anna Lee Fisher, Bill Fisher, Michael Foale, Jerry Linenger, Dan Tani and Terry Virts, and cosmonauts Sergei Zalyotin and Alexander “Sasha” Lazutkin.
Mullane says the documentary crew came to Albuquerque over a year ago and began with the interviews.
He was open to being a part of the story because it’s part of the nation’s history.
“I enjoy sharing what I experienced as a child in a space race. It was a magical time. I really feel blessed that I was able to live it as a child and a young teenager,” he says. “It’s great to talk about. I got to see history in the making and ultimately got to participate in it as an astronaut downstream. So just a great, great magical time.”
Though he’s had an illustrious career and is part of history, he never focuses on that part.
“I guess when somebody types in my name on Google, they’ll see something,” he says with a laugh. “I guess maybe that makes me a minor mark in history. There’s been certainly a lot of other astronauts, and a lot of them have done some incredible things, but yeah, there’s a little bit of Mike Mullane out there in Wikipedia.”
Mullane says every mission takes a team.
“The team effort for me was my parents and my wife, particularly my wife. She had to endure a lot to put me into space,” he says. “My parents certainly fueled my dream early on, but I married the right woman for the job that was ahead.”
Over time, Mullane’s scientific curiosity has continued to grow. He’s also fascinated by geology, anthropology and paleontology.
“It’s not just looking through a straw at the sky,” he says. “I’m a very curious person and that’s one thing that I preach to kids is to be curious and go out and read books and they’ll transport you back in time or transport you in the future.
“Make sure that you have a fierce curiosity. I’ve always carried a fierce curiosity about everything.”
