Aztec Ruins National Monument hosting a Winter Solstice Observation on Dec. 22
Aztec Ruins National Monument is hosting a Winter Solstice Observation at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22.
Visitors must arrive to the visitor center by 4:30 p.m. and will be led by rangers and volunteers to the alignment location. The monument asks participants to wear sturdy walking shoes and to dress for the weather.
According to the Aztec Ruins National Monument, the Aztec West great house at the monument was constructed about 900 years ago by ancestral Pueblo people to be in alignment with the solstices. With clear western skies, visitors will be able to observe the alignment of the north wall of Aztec West with the sunset's position on the western horizon. The back wall of the great house aligns with the sunrise of the summer solstice and the sunset of the winter solstice.
The event is free and does not require reservations. Aztec Ruins National Monument is located in Aztec.
