From Ludwig van Beethoven to Lenny Kravitz, Complexions Contemporary Ballet bridges musical and cultural worlds with an innovative dance program at The Lensic Performing Arts Center this Friday, July 31.

The program opens with 鈥淚magine Joy,鈥� a three-movement dance piece commissioned by local partner Aspen Santa Fe Ballet, which starts with a duet set to Beethoven鈥檚 鈥淥de to Joy鈥� and ends with 20th century composer Samuel Barber鈥檚 鈥淎dagio for Strings.鈥�

鈥淚t鈥檚 not about joy itself. It鈥檚 about trying to conjure a world where there is that type of joy 鈥� and all the struggles that it takes to find bliss, happiness and fulfillment,鈥� said Dwight Rhoden, Complexions鈥� artistic director and principal choreographer, who co-founded the company in 1994.

The Lensic program continues with a solo dance Rhoden choreographed for longtime Complexions dancer Vincenzo Di Primo to music by soul legend Donny Hathaway.

Complexions will also present excerpts from 鈥淭estament鈥� and 鈥淢ercy,鈥� two of Rhoden鈥檚 best-known choreographed works. 鈥淭estament鈥� is an expressive piece about the resilience of the human spirit, and the portion the company is presenting at The Lensic is set to 鈥淎mazing Grace.鈥�

鈥溾�楳ercy鈥� 鈥� was my response to 9/11 many years ago,鈥� Rhoden said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 very contemporary, and I want to say 鈥榗haotic,鈥� but also extremely bold section.鈥�

After an intermission, Complexions will perform a full-length piece, 鈥淟ove Rocks,鈥� set to the music of Lenny Kravitz.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a piece that has a message of love throughout, and it finishes on a very positive, reflective note,鈥� Rhoden said. 鈥淚t goes through a lot of (Kravitz鈥檚) hits.鈥�

Rhoden first met Kravitz at Prince鈥檚 Paisley Park estate in Minnesota.

鈥淚 was doing a tour with Prince, it was one of my first commercial gigs as a choreographer 鈥� there was a show at Paisley Park. 鈥� Lenny came because he was the opening act,鈥� Rhoden said. 鈥淪o, I met him there, and he asked me to choreograph 鈥楢merican Woman鈥� for him on the spot. We didn鈥檛 have much time. It was the same day as the show. But I wouldn鈥檛 say no to Lenny Kravitz, so I said, 鈥楢bsolutely!鈥欌��

Rhoden said he kept in touch with Kravitz over the years.

鈥淪o, when I wanted to do this work (鈥楲ove Rocks鈥�), I had the privilege of being able to reach out to him directly. And he was all about it,鈥� Rhoden said. 鈥淗e said nobody had ever done a ballet to his music, and he was so happy about it. Then, on opening night, when we premiered this back in New York, he came on FaceTime to wish the cast 鈥� a great run of the piece. He was very generous.鈥�

From its inception, Complexions has been a multicultural company whose dancers are not only racially diverse but also come from different dance backgrounds.

鈥淚 co-founded the company with Desmond Richardson, who is still the co-director of the company, and our intention at the time of starting Complexions was 鈥� to bring together people from various worlds 鈥� from the ballet world, the hip-hop world, the commercial world, the modern dance world,鈥� Rhoden said. 鈥淲e wanted it all in one place, and we wanted to see what would happen.鈥�

Although they formed Complexions as a one-off project, Richardson and Rhoden quickly recognized how special it was, and that it would be worth continuing.

鈥淲hen we saw what we had put together 鈥� the beauty and the force of it, the strength of the message, we were like, 鈥榃e have to do something with this. This is very important,鈥欌�� Rhoden said. 鈥淎nd here we are, 32 years later.鈥�

The message of Complexions is positive and inclusive, Rhoden said.

鈥淐omplexions is about unity. The very name of the company and our vision and our mission, in and of itself, has everything to do with celebrating our differences 鈥� actually celebrating the ways that we are different from one another,鈥� Rhoden said. 鈥�(Complexions) looks at our life in the world we live in, and (imagines) how we can be positive players in that. I might be a romantic at heart, but I do believe we can move the dial if we want to. It takes effort and passion 鈥� but I think Complexions is definitely one of those artistic organizations that has the passion for that kind of work.鈥�
