Handbells, historic homes and ‘Hansel & Gretel’: 7 events this week
Many (many) years ago, I played in my middle school’s handbell choir. I remember donning my white gloves, clutching two handbells, eagerly awaiting my moment. You can see these instruments being showcased at the Enchantment Albuquerque Handbell Ensemble’s spring concert or with the Chancel Bell Choir. Give them a hand
Enchantment Albuquerque Handbell Ensemble is holding its spring concert “Let Vibrate!” at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 9. The program includes original handbell compositions from the history of the instrument. Tickets are $15 at enchantmenthandbells.org. The Central ϼ Methodist Church is located at 201 University Blvd. NE.
How does your garden grow?
The Downtown Neighborhoods Association is hosting a Historic Home & Garden Tour from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 10. The tour covers Albuquerque’s Historic Fourth Ward. Tickets are $15-$20 at abqdna.org or $20-$25 the day of at the Harwood Art Center. Check in is at the Harwood Art Center, 1114 Seventh Street NW.
Hear them ring
The Chancel Bell Choir will be performing bell choir favorites including “Joyfully Ring” by Douglas J. Benon, “Exuberant Joy” by Arnold B. Sherman, Spanish folk song “De Colores” and more. The concert at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 8, is free. The First Presbyterian Church is located at 208 Grant Ave. in Santa Fe.
Teaches and herb
The Xeric Garden Club of New Mexico is hosting “Integrating Medicinal and Culinary Herbs in Your Garden,” a presentation by Dianne Rand at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 9. Rand will discuss planting medicinal herbs in the garden. The event at the Albuquerque Garden Center, 10120 Lomas Blvd. NE, is free.
Sounds of 66
The Route 66 Visitor Center is hosting a Centennial Concert Series every Saturday through May 30 from noon to 4 p.m. On Saturday, May 9, enjoy New Mexico Traditional Spanish music with Little Ralph Paiz, Tripple X with Luis Smoothie Soto and Red Wine Band with David Nunez. The concerts are free. The visitor center is located at 12300 Central Ave. SW.
Into the woods
The New Mexico Young Actors will be staging “Hansel & Gretel” at the South Broadway Cultural Center at 1:30 and 4 p.m. Saturday, May 9. The troupe will be retelling the classic fairy tale’s journey through the forest. Tickets are $12-$14 at nmyoungactors.org. The South Broadway Cultural Center is located at 1025 Broadway Blvd. SE.
Showing off a rainbow
The Albuquerque Aril and Iris Society is hosting its annual iris show from 1-5 p.m. Sunday, May 10. In addition to a rainbow’s worth of irises, there will also be artistic designs and photography featuring the flower. Those interested in showing can bring their irises to the Albuquerque Garden Center from 7-9:30 a.m. on Sunday. The event is free. The garden center is located at 10120 Lomas Blvd. NE.
