GO NEW MEXICO
What a gas!
With fuel prices soaring, overlanders are turning to reward apps, slower speeds and solar gear to keep spring and summer adventures affordable
From New Mexico to Alaska, there are ways to save on fuel.
The most expensive part of camping 鈥 especially if you鈥檙e overlanding and using free public lands for your sites or relatively cheap national park and forest places 鈥 is fuel.
Be it propane, gasoline or diesel, prices for any products created from petroleum have soared.
Near the end of April, fuel prices were significantly higher than this time last year, according to the report. The national average for regular gas is currently $4.176, compared to $3.150 one year ago. Diesel, according to AAA, averages $5.461 versus $3.536 last year, an increase of $1.925. In California, diesel costs more than $8 a gallon in remote areas.
But there are ways to slice this sticker shock.
The best way to combat high fuel prices: stay close to home. , and nearly unending deserve a visit or revisit.
But sometimes the wonders outside the Land of Enchantment call, so what are some strategies to save?
One of the simplest: slow down to consume substantially less fuel. Some of us may even remember the 1980s when the federal government mandated a 55 mph maximum on roadways throughout the nation to save oil during the embargo by Middle East nations.
Another is to use electric power banks and solar panels to power hot plates and kettles for hot meals.
For your vehicles, apps provide discount fuel prices, or at least discount snacks at fueling stations such as Circle K or 7-Eleven. Our New Mexico favorite, Allsup鈥檚, known as Yesway across much of Texas, has an app with discounts for fuel and food while still offering its world-renowned fried burritos.
One of the best deals right now includes $.25 a gallon off at Circle K with the app.
Of course, it is easier said than done getting these deals. First, you have to have decent internet access to pull these apps onto your devices.
Be sure to get them on each person鈥檚 device or you may run into a situation where the phone with the app is out of power at the same time that you need fuel.
All the registration processes after downloading vary, and all require you to select a new unique password, following some kind of hellish sequence of numbers, letters and special characters, which often must be entered twice, and poorly designed apps like Circle K鈥檚 do not allow you to even see what you have typed.
Here鈥檚 what happened to us after we stood on the corner in Winslow, Arizona. We arrived at the Circle K with less than a gallon of gasoline in our tank, our bellies empty, and throttled T-Mobile cellular data access.
Sitting at the pump, we saw the promise of $.25 off per gallon of gas for your next five purchases if you just scan a QR code and download an app.
The promise was too good to be true as we blocked the pump, waiting for the app to download. Waiting, waiting, waiting. We saw placards on the pumps and on the windows of the station promising discount treats like hotdogs and sodas for registered users. Success seemed to be at hand for the hangry adventurers and our vehicle, as we launched the app to the promised land of discounts.
Registration seemed simple enough, but after I entered the password and what seemed like an interminable number of questions, the dreaded dual authentication box popped up and said it would send me a code via text.
I received the text message and immediately entered the code incorrectly, two times, locking myself out. I saw the strain on my wife鈥檚 face through the rearview mirror as she said, 鈥淛ust pump the gas.鈥 Forget the discount, she said.
The app cheerfully announced I had been locked out but could try again in 30 minutes. That was not happening this time.
The tank was filled sans the $.25 per gallon discount, and marital harmony was restored.
Now we had discounts awaiting at the next stops, as long as we could remember our passwords and double-authenticate.
Each brand requires its own app, which provides discounts after giving up your personal information. So be sure to download each of the apps when you have high-speed internet and register before heading out.
Smith鈥檚 grocery points can also be used for gas discounts at all the stores in the Kroger chain, including Ralphs in California and Fred Meyer in Alaska.
