The city of Albuquerque remains prepared for the final two months of monsoon season, with the Department of Municipal Development keeping teams on high alert.

Department Director Jennifer Turner said the city鈥檚 team is trained to respond as soon as weather changes.

鈥淭hey鈥檒l be on standby this week and beyond as monsoon conditions continue,鈥� she said.

Fred Montoya, the department鈥檚 operations and maintenance superintendent, explained how the department prepares for storms.

鈥淥ur team closely monitors weather conditions, and depending on forecasts and anticipated storm severity, we place additional personnel on standby to ensure we are prepared,鈥� Montoya said.

After a recent storm brought more than an inch of rain to parts of the city, the department deployed street sweepers and Vactor trucks 鈥� vacuum sewer cleaners 鈥� to clear storm drains and help manage flooding.

鈥淒uring the storm, we are out there pumping out flooded areas and responding to debris,鈥� Montoya said.

While monsoon season presents unique challenges, he said, the department鈥檚 commitment to road safety remains constant.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a year-round effort,鈥� he said.

Montoya also praised the city employees who respond during severe weather events.

鈥淚 would like to recognize the street maintenance team and first responders. They are committed to responding to storm events at a moment鈥檚 notice to help keep Albuquerque streets safe and passable for our residents,鈥� Montoya said.
