The La Cueva Bears can only hope that the final two weeks of their volleyball season go as swimmingly as the first two.

No. 1-ranked La Cueva (6-0) on Saturday night completed an impressive run through the Albuquerque Metro Championships, sweeping No. 2-ranked Cleveland (8-2) in the final at Del Norte.

The scores were 25-15, 25-19, 26-24. The Bears saved a set point in the third set to put the Storm away as La Cueva claimed its fourth metro title in the last five seasons.

And with this victory, La Cueva is 5-0 against other teams ranked in the top five already this young season. That includes two wins over Cleveland, two over No. 4-ranked Albuquerque High and a fifth against No. 5 近距离内射合集 Vista.

鈥淚 built the schedule. I front-loaded the schedule because we wanted to see the top teams right away.鈥�

Senior outside hitter Jula Utash led the Bears with 17 kills and eight digs. Setter Charlie Ferguson had 32 aces, junior defensive specialist Embrey Eisele had 15 digs and an ace, and Leah Jones contributed 10 kills.

鈥淲e just really wanted to do what we came in to do: finish it in three sets,鈥� said Utash. 鈥淚 think it was really important because we know where we stand when we play them. 鈥� Today we came in and we wanted to dominate.鈥�

La Cueva asserted itself quickly with a double-digit lead in the opening set. The Bears frustrated Cleveland with solid serving, a couple of aces, good work in the middle by junior Carmen Jones, and a set that finished with Utash registering a kill.

Although the Bears served horribly in the second set, aside from two aces to start, the Storm had their own issues serving. Still, the set was very much in doubt, until a Utash block, a hitting error by Cleveland and a kill by Utash staked La Cueva to a 24-18 lead. The winning point in the set was a Storm net violation.

Cleveland was effective and energetic in a third set that it led just about the entire way.

Late in the set, consecutive hitting errors saw a 22-20 Storm lead turn into a 23-22 La Cueva edge. But Cleveland senior Molly Maurer had a kill in the middle, followed by an ace, and the Storm had a set point to extend the match.

However, there was a hitting error on set point, then a tip winner by Carmen Jones, and then a match-clinching kill by Utash.

This veteran Bears roster very much wants to get over the hump after finished second to Las Cruces in the last two seasons in the playoffs.

鈥淚 think none of us has seen a state championship, and we all really want that,鈥� Leah Jones said. 

The Bears will face some additional tests in the coming weeks. They are at the Rio Rancho VolleyBash later this month, an event that includes Cleveland, three-time defending state champion Las Cruces and the reigning 4A state champ, St. Pius.

And immediately after that, they鈥檒l be in Phoenix for an elite national event.

鈥淲e just know we have to work super hard this whole season,鈥� Leah Jones said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 the same girls from last season 鈥� it鈥檚 about discipline and, how can we improve what we already have?鈥�

Winning metros makes for an excellent start.

鈥淚t never gets old,鈥� Archibeque said. 鈥淓specially the competition, knowing we play the best in the city.鈥�
