LAS CRUCES 鈥� A jury found Gustavo Dominguez, 18, guilty on three counts of first-degree murder Tuesday, concluding the fourth and final trial 鈥� pending appeals 鈥� resulting from the 2025 shootout in Young Park.

The conclusion netted District Attorney Fernando Macias a fourth completed murder trial and conviction less than 16 months after gunfire and chaos befell an informal car meetup at the entrance to a popular city park on March 21, 2025.

Dominguez, who was 17 years old at the time, was accused of firing into a crowd of up to 200 people who had been watching cars spin in the parking lot as onlookers cheered and filmed the cars with their mobile phones.

Those phones were ultimately vital to the police investigation into a shooting that killed 19-year-old Dominick Estrada along with bystanders Andrew 鈥淎J鈥� Madrid, 16, and Jason Gomez, 17. Video footage and still images from the witnesses鈥� phones helped prosecutors assemble their case that Dominguez took part in a coordinated attack targeting Estrada, killing him along with two teenagers and wounding 14 other people 鈥� some of whom were shot multiple times.

The other shooters convicted in separate trials were brothers Tomas and Nathan Rivas, 22 and 18; and Josiah Ontiveros, 16.

The trial took place over five days in a tense courtroom, with friends and loved ones of Estrada as well as survivors seated adjacent to Dominguez鈥檚 family.

Although police did not recover a firearm tied to Dominguez鈥檚 actions that night, prosecutors used mobile phone images and a diagram of spent bullet casings to track Dominguez鈥檚 location during a brief yet furious battle in which Estrada fired back while attempting to take cover behind a tree in the parking lot.

The jury convicted Dominguez of first-degree murder involving a 鈥渄epraved mind,鈥� which allows a conviction even in a case where a defendant did not kill a victim but may be held culpable in 鈥渙utrageously reckless conduct鈥� while participating in or encouraging the crime. While other states have such 鈥渄epraved mind鈥� murder statutes, it is less common as a first-degree or capital felony, as in New Mexico.

Recapping the evidence presented at trial, Macias told the jury Dominguez was 鈥渙n the offensive,鈥� armed and wearing a mask, asking witnesses for Estrada鈥檚 location. After firing several shots from what is believed to a .45 caliber handgun toward Estrada and a fleeing crowd behind him, Macias presented a photo purporting to show Dominguez climbing into an automobile with the other shooters before leaving the scene.

鈥淎n innocent man doesn鈥檛 run,鈥� Macias said.

Dominguez鈥檚 attorney, Herman Ortiz, maintained that prosecutors hadn鈥檛 proved their case beyond a reasonable doubt, saying the case was based on opinion and conjecture beyond what the evidence showed. Ortiz said Dominguez was not acting in unison with the other men and did not travel with them to El Paso, Texas, for what prosecutors said was an attempt to construct an alibi.

鈥淗e doesn鈥檛 know why he鈥檚 here,鈥� Ortiz told the jury. 鈥淗e didn鈥檛 kill anybody.鈥�

Ortiz argued that a physical confrontation that preceded the shooting, involving Estrada鈥檚 uncle, Ruben Morales, grabbing Dominguez from behind, 鈥渓it the match鈥� that sparked the battle. Prosecutors said Morales acted when he saw Dominguez present a weapon and attempted to avert a shooting 鈥� and survived being shot 11 times himself.

The jury deliberated for less than an hour and a half before returning a guilty verdict on each count, eschewing an opportunity to convict on lesser charges of voluntary manslaughter.

Immediately after the trial, Macias told reporters he was pleased with the verdicts as well as the pace of the trials themselves, saying, 鈥淭he community needed to have confidence in the speed in which we could arrive at a completed trial.鈥�

Macias continued, 鈥淭hese four individuals have destroyed their lives almost in a similar manner to the way they destroyed the three lives of the victims in this matter. 鈥� We have to impress upon the youth in this community 鈥� not just the youth, the adults as well 鈥� who think that they can live within this gun culture within this community: We will pursue every case involving this gun violence as aggressively as we did in this case.鈥�

At sentencing, to be scheduled in the coming months, Macias said he would seek 90-year prison sentences for each of the four shooters.

Ortiz said Dominguez would appeal his conviction, and said the statute provided 鈥渁 fairly broad net鈥� for convicting defendants like Dominguez.

鈥淚f you're with a group of people and something tragic like this happens, you could get caught up in it,鈥� Ortiz said. 鈥淲e felt that the facts didn't support 鈥榙epraved mind.鈥� At most, we thought it might support a voluntary manslaughter consideration, but obviously the jury disagreed. And at this point, we respect the decision of the jury.鈥�
