John Barron is set to join KOAT as a sports director and anchor starting July 23.

KOAT-TV welcomes a new face to its team starting Thursday.

鈥淐overing sports is about Friday nights and fans that are the most passionate about sports,鈥 said John Barron, who was named KOAT鈥檚 sports director and anchor. 

With experience covering professional, collegiate and high school athletics, Barron came to New Mexico from West Palm Beach, Florida, where he covered the Miami Dolphins and Florida Panthers.

Barron is set to cover the NFL preseason, the arrival of a new hockey team and Super Bowl LXI, which will air on KOAT.

In addition to covering sports, Barron has breaking news and weather experience. He reported on hurricane seasons in Florida, including Hurricane Ian in 2022.  

鈥淚 get to be the voice to help guide viewers with information to keep them safe,鈥 Barron said. 

Barron, from Marietta, Georgia, grew up playing multiple sports, but committed to football when he got recruited by Savannah State University, where he graduated with a degree in mass communications.

鈥淭here is excitement in bringing breaking news and sports coverage that I feel are important for the audience,鈥 he said. 

He was named Best Sports Anchor in the television division of the Georgia Association of Broadcasters 2020 awards and received a 2022 Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists award for sports reporting. 

鈥淭he addition of John to both our news team and running point as sports director will serve our viewers tremendously,鈥 said Lori Waldon, KOAT president and general manager. 

鈥淗is journalistic approach to telling important stories of the day will be combined with serving up sports insights unmatched in the market,鈥 Waldon said. 

Viewers can watch Barron at KOAT Action 7 近距离内射合集, airing Monday through Friday at 4 p.m. and delivering KOAT 7 Sports, Monday through Friday at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.
