'Rust' releases in New Mexico three years after cinematographer Hutchins' tragic death

Published Modified

On Friday, the Western film 鈥淩ust鈥 began screening at Allen Theatres across New Mexico, including Alamogordo, Farmington, Gallup, Las Cruces and Roswell. The film鈥檚 limited release comes three years after its lead actor, Alec Baldwin, accidentally shot and killed the cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins.

While criminal charges against Baldwin were eventually dropped, the armorer on the set, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, was found of involuntary manslaughter in March 2024.

鈥淩ust鈥 is not being screened in Albuquerque or Santa Fe at this time.

Hutchins鈥 husband, Matthew, was brought on as an executive producer of the film following his wife鈥檚 death, and he has been a strong proponent of the film鈥檚 release, according to an Associated Press .

The cinematographer鈥檚 mother, father and sister, meanwhile, remain embroiled in a civil suit against Baldwin, which is being adjudicated in New Mexico. According to NPR, they and their attorney, Gloria Allred, have to comment on the film鈥檚 New Mexico release this week.

Hutchins鈥 mother, Olga Solovey, has spoken out against releasing 鈥淩ust,鈥 calling it an attempt by Baldwin to 鈥渦njustly profit鈥 off her daughter鈥檚 death.

鈥淎lec Baldwin continues to increase my pain with his refusal to apologize to me and his refusal to take responsibility for her death,鈥 she in a statement issued by Allred, according to The Associated Press.

Early reviews of the film have been generally negative. 鈥淩ust鈥 currently has a 48% fresh rating on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, based on 21 reviews.
