LAS CRUCES 鈥� City police have charged a 40-year-old Las Crucen in the May 4 shooting that damaged a historic Catholic church.

City police used security camera footage, license plate reader data and other surveillance technology to track a car that was later searched in connection with another criminal investigation.

That search produced the weapon police say Matthew Albian Alarcon, 40, used to shoot five rounds into the entrance of the St. Genevieve Catholic Church鈥檚 sanctuary on Espina Avenue.

At 4:27 a.m. on a Monday morning, video retrieved by police allegedly showed a black Chevrolet Malibu circle the church before parking in front. Police said the video then shows a man exit the vehicle and open fire at the church entrance. Police indicated that Alarcon was visible in the video footage, helping to identify him later.

A car similar to the one seen in the video was spotted at a Las Cruces residence, charging documents state, and linked to Alarcon. Police said license plate reader data indicates the car鈥檚 Arizona license plate was switched for another after the shooting.

Early in the morning May 11, a patrol officer interrupted a suspected burglary attempt at a gun and ammunition store on Telshor Boulevard. Alarcon and another man were detained. Police obtained a search warrant for the car and recovered a Lorcin L380 handgun that police say was reported as stolen.

The gun was subsequently matched with the .380 caliber shell casings recovered from the church. Police also said they found a Glock magazine and equipment in the trunk consistent with burglary tools.

Affidavits by police do not allege that Alarcon confessed to any of the actions or state a motive.

Alarcon has been charged with fourth-degree felony counts of desecration of a church amounting to more than $1,000 and tampering with evidence, in connection with the church. In the matter involving the store, he was charged with conspiracy to commit nonresidential burglary; conspiracy to commit breaking and entering; possession of burglary tools and receiving a stolen firearm, all fourth-degree felonies. He was also charged with a misdemeanor count of conspiracy to commit a felony.

Jail records indicate he was booked into the Do帽a Ana County Detention Center the afternoon of May 14, after being arrested at the residence. He did not appear to have retained a defense attorney as of Monday. Prosecutors have filed a motion to keep Alarcon in custody through trial, with a detention hearing set for Wednesday.
