Suspect in custody after police shooting in Bernalillo

Rail Runner service suspended and Bernalillo Public Schools closed as authorities investigate

A suspect is in custody after getting into a shootout with police early Tuesday morning in Bernalillo.

The Bernalillo Police Department, in a statement posted to Facebook, did not say if the person was struck by gunfire. The agency said the man pointed a gun at officers.

New Mexico State Police told the Journal no officers were injured. 

BPD officers were dispatched around 4:50 a.m. for reports that a man was shooting at a vehicle near U.S. Highway 550 and North Hill, according to the agency鈥檚 Facebook post. 

Police said officers confronted the man and chased him north of the Rail Runner station along Highway 550. Officers lost sight of the man and cordoned off a search area. 

鈥淒uring the search for the subject, officers located him, at which point a firearm was pointed at officers,鈥 BPD said. 鈥淥fficers engaged the suspect with gunfire.鈥

The man fled and a gunfight ensued between him and police, according to BPD.

BPD said around 7:10 a.m., the man was taken into custody.

New Mexico State Police spokesperson Wilson Silver said officers were investigating the shooting and additional details would be released at a later time.

The suspect was near Bernalillo High School but did not get onto school grounds, according to BPS spokesperson Mikaela Maldonado.

Bernalillo Public Schools cancelled classes for the remainder of the day and they will resume on Wednesday. School buses are unable to leave the lot and access to the Bernalillo High campus is restricted for all students, according to the district.

The New Mexico Rail Runner suspended service at the Sandoval County/U.S. 550 station on Tuesday.


The New Mexico Rail Runner service was also suspended due to the police shooting.

Passengers using the Rail Runner will be bused between the Downtown Albuquerque and Santa Fe Depot stations, according to a Facebook post from the Rail Runner. The district said school buses are unable to leave the lot and access to the Bernalillo High School campus is restricted for all students.
