Toddler dead after 'serious medical emergency' at East Mountains daycare

A 1-year-old died after they were reportedly found unconscious and not breathing at a daycare center in Tijeras, according to the Bernalillo County Sheriff鈥檚 Office.
BCSO spokesperson Connor Otero said in a news release that deputies were dispatched around 12:15 p.m. Wednesday to the New Mexico Early Learning Academy along N.M. 33 after a child had a 鈥渟erious medical emergency.鈥�
The child, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital and died.
鈥淭his incident remains under investigation,鈥� Otero said. 鈥淎t this time, there are no indications of foul play or neglect.鈥�
New Mexico Early Learning Academy staff said that the school will be closed for the remainder of the week. The school will also provide counselors and grief-support resources for those in need.
鈥淭his is a tragic situation, and the Bernalillo County Sheriff鈥檚 Office is saddened for the child鈥檚 family, friends, and the staff members who were involved,鈥� Otero said. 鈥淥ut of respect for the family鈥檚 privacy, no additional information is available for release at this time.鈥�
