Prosecutors have filed a motion to keep a woman accused of fatally stabbing a woman in Southeast Albuquerque last week behind bars.

Geraldine Begay, 52, was initially charged with aggravated battery, but the charge was upped Monday to an open count of murder after 59-year-old Crystal Markum died from her injuries on Sunday.

鈥淭he defendant stabbed and killed Markum in an argument,鈥� states the pretrial detention motion. 鈥淭his behavior is dangerous and extreme.鈥�

Police were dispatched Friday afternoon to the French Quarters Apartments, at 1101 Palomas, after receiving a call that Markum had been stabbed in the shoulder, according to a news release from Albuquerque Police Department spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos.

She was taken to a hospital and later died, he said.

Witnesses told police they heard Markum yelling and saw Begay at the complex during the incident, according to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court.

Police obtained video footage that showed Begay at a walkway at the apartments with a 鈥渂loody knife in her hand,鈥� the complaint states.

Officers took Begay into custody at the apartment complex. They also found a knife at the scene, according to the complaint.

In 2023, Begay was charged with second-degree murder for allegedly killing a friend outside of an apartment in Southeast Albuquerque, according to previous Journal reporting.

The case was dismissed after prosecutors deemed Begay was not competent to stand trial, according to court records.
