Journal鈥檚 CFO breaks the mold

Published Modified

A native New Mexican. A Hispanic mother of two. A New Mexico State University grad with a master鈥檚 degree in accounting from the University of New Mexico. Outgoing and definitely a people person.

Racquel Barnes is not your stereotypical CPA. What she is, is the chief financial officer for the Lang family and all of the Journal鈥檚 many operations.

鈥淢y role is to provide information and guidance, to meet business goals, but also the family's goals,鈥 Barnes said in a recent interview.

Barnes joined the Journal in August 2013, as the tax and accounting manager for the Lang family. She then moved into the corporate controller position in March 2014.

In recent years, as Lowell Hare wanted to scale back from his position as chief financial officer, Barnes took on more of his responsibilities and ultimately was named CFO.

One of the best things about working for the Lang family, she says, is that both former publisher Tom Lang and current publisher Bill Lang put the right people in the right positions regardless of age, ethnicity or background.

鈥淚 was 13 years younger when I started here, barely into my 30s, and I worked with people who were much more seasoned than me,鈥 Barnes said. 鈥淎nd that didn't make them discount my opinions or my insight at all. And so they do a really good job of seeing the value and the potential that someone brings, regardless of any of those outside factors.鈥

She says her role at the Journal is different from CFOs鈥 roles at other companies, where the primary goal is to maximize the company鈥檚 value, and build up their businesses so they can sell them for a profit.

鈥淗ere, the family legacy is very important, and it shapes how we choose to use our resources,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd Bill鈥檚 goal in general is for the Journal to be around another 100 years.鈥

When asked what has led to the Journal鈥檚 successful longevity, she replied: 鈥淚t鈥檚 due to the family and it's due to the community, which has supported the Journal in these 100 years. We have relied on them to be our readers and to be our advertisers.鈥

She also acknowledges the many challenges facing the newspaper industry: 鈥淭here are no local daily newspapers that have really found the secret sauce to making it work.鈥

But the Journal is determined to test out new recipes, offering 鈥 in addition to print 鈥 a plethora of other platforms, including newsletters, podcasts, apps, live-streaming and more.

Whatever future paths the Journal takes, Barnes is sure to have a voice.

鈥淚 love to express my opinion and they (the Langs) are very willing to hear what I have to say. They really have allowed me to be a part of everything and to help with decisions, and to bring my own ideas.鈥
