New Mexico is blessed with extraordinary natural resources, resilient communities and hardworking people who have built our state through generations of dedication and sacrifice. As we discuss our economic future, it is important to recognize the industries that make many of our shared priorities possible.

The oil and gas industry is one of those industries. While production is concentrated in parts of southeastern and northwestern New Mexico, the benefits reach every county in our state. The revenues generated through oil and gas production help fund our public schools, colleges and universities, roads, public safety and healthcare systems. Critical investments in hospitals, behavioral health programs, public mental health facilities and other healthcare initiatives simply would not be possible at their current level without the revenues this industry provides.

As someone who represents northern New Mexico, I know firsthand that communities hundreds of miles from an oil well still benefit from the economic engine that energy production provides. That reality reminds us that New Mexico succeeds when we recognize our shared interests rather than our geographic differences.

At the same time, New Mexicans understand the importance of protecting the land, air and water that define our state. Responsible energy production and environmental stewardship are not competing goals 鈥� they are responsibilities we share. A genuine, unified commitment to a cleaner environment takes all of us if New Mexico is to truly prosper. That means encouraging innovation, supporting technologies that reduce emissions, protecting our natural resources and holding ourselves accountable for preserving them for future generations.

Too often, energy conversations become framed as one side versus another. That approach serves no one. New Mexico has always been strongest when we reject false choices and focus instead on practical solutions. We can continue investing in renewable energy while recognizing the vital role oil and natural gas play in supporting our economy today. We can pursue environmental progress while preserving the jobs and revenues that sustain communities across our state.

Our future requires an all-of-the-above approach built on partnership rather than division. Industry, workers, tribal governments, educators, healthcare providers, environmental advocates and policymakers all have a role to play in building a stronger New Mexico.

The decisions we make today will shape the opportunities available to the next generation. By working together 鈥� and by recognizing that our economic prosperity and environmental stewardship go hand in hand 鈥� we can continue building a New Mexico that is healthier, stronger and more prosperous for everyone.
