OPINION: Working families tax cuts are helping restore the American Dream

Tax Day is April 15, the deadline for filing federal income tax returns.

For generations, the American Dream meant something simple: If you worked hard, played by the rules and invested in your family, you could get ahead. The Trump administration鈥檚  reflect that basic principle, and it鈥檚 showing up in New Mexicans鈥 budgets, in paychecks and .

In New Mexico, the average taxpayer is seeing a of about $1,900 this tax year. Families with children are seeing average tax relief of about $2,800 this year. For families across New Mexico, this relief creates an opportunity to move from getting by to getting ahead.

Tax policy has typically recognized the added costs of raising a family, but these reforms go further, ensuring that families keeping our economy running can keep more of what they earn. The tax relief is showing up in the everyday work of Americans across the country.

For example, a married couple who work as a truck driver and a home health aide with two children will get tax savings of about $6,500 this year. A single nurse working overtime could see approximately $5,800 in tax savings this tax year.

When New Mexicans get more back at tax time, it鈥檚 a clear sign that policy is moving in the right direction and that the system is starting to recognize the value of hard work. For some, the extra $2,800 can mean starting a new business, translating into more jobs and opportunities in communities across New Mexico.

Tax relief for New Mexico seniors means peace of mind and more confidence in retirement. Seniors in New Mexico are seeing average tax cuts of more than $2,400 this tax year, helping protect their retirement income.

As leaders focused on expanding opportunity 鈥 and who understand firsthand how much that opportunity makes a difference 鈥 we believe economic policy should always aim higher. It should not settle for managing hardship; it should create the conditions for success.

These reforms are helping restore a fundamental promise: that hard work leads to progress, that families can get ahead and that the American Dream remains within reach. This Tax Day, that promise is starting to feel real again.
