After a lopsided win to open the season, Jason Eck wants to see his team continue to improve.

New Mexico鈥檚 second-year coach wouldn鈥檛 mind seeing a bigger crowd, too. 

Eck said he wants more fans in attendance at University Stadium next Saturday for the Lobos鈥� game against FCS-opponent Mercyhurst (2 p.m.).

UNM announced an attendance of 24,126 fans Saturday night, the largest for a home opener since 2014. The Lobos beat Central Michigan 38-7.

鈥淚 thought the crowd was solid and I鈥檓 very appreciative of the (24,126),鈥� Eck said. 鈥淏ut those (extra) 6,000 people who came to (last year鈥檚 regular-season finale against) San Diego State didn鈥檛 come yesterday 鈥� or tonight. They missed out on some good stuff.

鈥淚 mean, that鈥檚 a good football team, man. Again, that鈥檚 a 31-point win against a team that was in a bowl game last year. So, I鈥檇 like to see a better crowd next week.鈥�

Eck coached the Lobos to a 9-4 record last year, leading to the highest year-over-year attendance increase among FBS programs. After averaging 16,001 fans per game in 2024, UNM home attendance increased almost 58% to an average of 25,252 through six home games in 2025.

UNM sold more than 2,600 new season ticket packages ahead of this season, one in which the Lobos are expected to contend for a Mountain West title.

鈥淚t was our best opening crowd since 2014,鈥� Eck added. 鈥淏ut I鈥檇 say this: I think this is going to be the best football team (at UNM) since further back than that. So I expect better. I think these guys deserve better than that.鈥�

Notes and quotes

• UNM was a drive away from notching its first shutout win since 2022. Eck wasn鈥檛 bothered the Lobos lost it: 鈥淚 wanted to get the backups in. We might have even kept (linebacker Jaxton Eck) in a few plays too long because his shoulder was bothering him a little bit. Win by 38 or 31, it鈥檚 good to get the (second-stringers) reps, and I鈥檇 rather get those guys in there and not get a shutout than keep the starters in and get a shutout.鈥�

• Eck mostly liked what he saw from quarterbacks Luke Moga, Toa Fa鈥檃vae and James Laubstein: 鈥淚 think they all did good things. I was proud of Toa for protecting the football. I thought that was good because that was a little problem in camp. 鈥� I didn鈥檛 expect anybody to play perfect tonight, but I thought the quarterbacks did a good job and executed our plan kinda the way we wanted.鈥�

• Safety Marco Beltran racked up 47 punt return yards in his Lobos debut. Eck was very pleased with the freshman鈥檚 performance: 鈥淗e was electric. Usually you just hope a freshman doesn鈥檛 drop it, but he had two pretty electric returns. He鈥檚 a football-playing Jesse, man. He鈥檚 a good player. 鈥� He just catches it really naturally.鈥�

• Receiver Shawn Miller missed Saturday鈥檚 game with a concussion, Eck said. It is unclear when he might be able to return.

• Eck did not have any updates on offensive lineman Jaymar Tasi, tight end Tripp Walsh and receiver Massiah Mingo after Saturday鈥檚 game. All three missed the second half with undisclosed injuries.

• After Tasi left Saturday鈥檚 game with an injury, right tackle Tyler Lawrence moved inside to play right guard and freshman Danzel Newell came in to replace Lawrence. He finished the game as UNM鈥檚 highest graded offensive lineman by Pro Football Focus: 鈥�(Newell) seemed very composed, you feel me?鈥� running back Scottre Humphrey said. 鈥淗e already knew he was the next one up, so he was already focused on the game. He was already locked in.鈥�
