For the first time this spring, the pads popped.

New Mexico held a full-contact practice Friday, with a scrimmage period to close out its fifth session of the spring and first full week of practice.

Here鈥檚 a sampling of plays and drives from Friday鈥檚 scrimmage:

Note: All yardage figures are approximate.

First-string offense vs. first-string defense

Lobo quarterback Luke Moga throws passes during the first Spring practice at the indoor facility Friday afternoon.

First-and-10: Quarterback Luke Moga hands off to running back Scottre Humphrey for a run up the middle. Gain of five yards.

Second-and-5: Moga hands off to Humphrey for a midzone run. Gain of three.

Third-and-2: Moga takes the snap, runs to his left and beats out cornerback Ormanie Arnold (barely) for the first down. Defense thought they had the stop until head coach Jason Eck cleared that up: 鈥淔IRST DOWN!! FIRST DOWN!!鈥 he yelled after.

First-and-10: Moga hands off to Humphrey for a run up the middle. Gain of four.

Second-and-6: Moga drops back and fires a pass to wide receiver Massiah Mingo near the left sideline, but he can鈥檛 haul it in. No gain.

Third-and-6: Moga targets running back Deshaun Buchanan on the right sideline and he makes the catch 鈥 out of bounds, though. No gain, series over.

Second-string offense vs. second-string defense

First-and-10: Quarterback Toa Fa鈥檃vae targets tight end Max Leeper down the field, pass is picked off by cornerback Jahmir Torres. Series over.

Third-string offense vs. third-string defense

First-and-10: Quarterback Gabriel Motschenbacher hands off to running back Kiefer Sibley, who is immediately tackled by defensive lineman A.J. Robinson. Loss of four.

Second-and-14: Motschenbacher targets tight end Simon Mapa down the field, but safety Marco Beltran gets a hand on the pass and bats it down. No gain.

Third-and-14: Heck of a run down the left sideline by running back Cameron Mathews. Not enough for a first (gain of 10?) but one of a handful of nice plays from the Memphis transfer on Friday.

First-string offense vs. first-string offense

First-and-10: Quarterback Toa Fa鈥檃vae hands off to Sibley for a run down the sideline. Gain of nine.

Second-and-1: Fa鈥檃vae hands off to Sibley, but cornerback Frankie Edwards gets in the backfield to come up with the tackle. Loss of four.

Third-and-5: Fa鈥檃vae hits tight end Tripp Walsh over the middle for a fresh set of downs; safety C.J. McBean did deliver quite the hit on Walsh, though. Gain of 12.

First-and-10: Fa鈥檃vae hands off to Buchanan, who is tackled in the backfield. Loss of two.

Second-and-12: Fa鈥檃vae targets running back Jerod Terry Jr., who deflects the pass into the hands of McBean for a pick six. End of series.

Additional notes

A few other scrimmage (and non-scrimmage) notes from a day the defense maybe didn鈥檛 dominate, but showed awfully well:

  • The Journal regrets not charting the third-string offense鈥檚 second scrimmage series, far and away the longest drive of Friday鈥檚 scrimmage period. It might have been the most entertaining, too, with Motschenbacher finding wide receiver Miles Johnson for a series-ending touchdown and Johnson making a point to celebrate right in the face of safety Joshua Barnes.

The only issue? UNM had refs for Friday鈥檚 scrimmage, so Johnson got to celebrate for all of two seconds before multiple flags were thrown. 鈥淭eachable moment,鈥 Eck said.

  • If the only surefire way to evaluate running backs is in full-contact scrimmages, the returns from Friday were pretty encouraging. UNM鈥檚 two transfer backs, Mathews and Sibley, both showed some pop while Humphrey looked plenty steady. And for how well the Lobos鈥 defense has played recently, the backs still found ways to clip off a good deal of 5-yard runs Friday.

  • The winner of Friday鈥檚 hammer, awarded to whoever Eck deems the player of the practice? Edwards, who not only had a nice tackle for loss during the scrimmage, but also picked off Moga during an earlier team period.

鈥淗e hurt his knee a little bit in that San Diego State game (and it) kinda really bothered him in the offseason and held him back,鈥 Eck said. 鈥淏ut it was good to see him out there fully cleared today 鈥 I thought he did a really good job.鈥
