For the 22nd time, purple reign indeed.
No girls basketball program in this state 鈥 in fact, few programs in any sport in New Mexico 鈥 is as regularly decorated as the Kirtland Central Broncos. On Friday night, Kirtland rolled to its 22nd championship, as the No. 1 seed throttled No. 2 Gallup 52-33 in the Class 4A final in front of approximately 12,000 fans inside the Pit.
鈥淭his is just a special group,鈥 Broncos coach Devon Manning said. 鈥淭hey executed our game plan tonight 鈥 We felt pretty confident, as long as we were getting in defensive transition, we just liked our chances. These are some awesome girls. I love them to death.鈥
Kirtland Central stood atop the 4A division right from the start, going back to November.
鈥淲e wanted it really bad today,鈥 said senior post Krista Tsingine-Yazzie, a partial reference to losing to Gallup on this same stage in this same round 12 months earlier.
The Broncos (29-3) repeatedly challenged themselves to prepare for this week, and in particular this very night. Kirtland stepped outside the 4A division for a number of high-profile matchups against Class 5A powers. To wit: Kirtland Central met three of the four 5A state semifinalists, including the two remaining teams in this year鈥檚 bracket, Hobbs and Rio Rancho.
鈥淲e鈥檝e played the best of the best the state has to offer,鈥 Manning said. 鈥淟ast year, they were a little young. This year, they grew up, and they understand it鈥檚 a long game. And man, they just worked so hard for this moment.鈥
The Eagles and Rams were the only teams to solve Kirtland Central 鈥 until the District 1-4A championship game two weeks ago, where Gallup beat the Broncos 49-41. This, after the Bengals lost two district games to Kirtland Central by a combined 67 points.

Santa Fe Indian School has been oh so close before, losing the last four times it has been in the Class 3A girls state championship game since the Braves won their last one in 2011. But that stretch came to an end Friday as SFIS put away two-time defending champion Navajo Prep 43-35.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been our journey. It鈥檚 been something we manifested,鈥 Braves coach Khadijha Jackson said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been something that we鈥檝e been talking about constantly, every day, just reminding them how good of a team they are. These 12 girls have had heart all season.鈥
And the Braves were motivated to honor brothers Jason and Nathan Abeyta, who were killed last April in an automobile accident. Jason was the SFIS boy鈥檚 basketball coach and Nathan was the school鈥檚 assistant athletic director.
鈥淭his year has been tough. Using our two angels above, Nate and Jay, feeling that they鈥檙e here.鈥 Jackson said. 鈥淪o that was also our greatest motivation for the season was to give back to them because of what they did. Especially my girls, they were their number one supporters.鈥
All that emerged in the fourth quarter as a surge gave Indian School the win.
The Braves scored 10 straight to turn a 32-29 deficit into a 38-32 lead with one minute remaining that never shrank closer than four points the rest of the way.
Kaydence Riley led SFIS with 10 points and 12 boards, while Brittany Whitney had nine points and eight rebounds and Toni Riley added eight points with seven rebounds.
Kameron Dale had 12 points, and Kamyra Goldtooth and Nataya Serrano each had eight rebounds for the Eagles.

Mesa Vista beat Tatum 49-47 to win their first Class 2A Girls Basketball Title at the 2026 Nusenda Credit Union State Basketball Championships. Here are some of the highlights.

For as long as Mesa Vista fields a girls basketball program, what happened at the end of Saturday鈥檚 Class 2A state title game will go down as perhaps the greatest play in the program鈥檚 history, authored by a player who very well could be remembered as one of its all-time greats.
It also wasn鈥檛 supposed to go down the way it did.
Just ask Aaliyah Boies.
鈥淚t wasn鈥檛 planned,鈥 Mesa Vista鈥檚 star guard clarified. 鈥淲e had a different plan.鈥
The original plan: A smart play called 鈥淔lash.鈥 Trailing 47-46 to defending champion Tatum with 9.5 seconds left, three Trojans were supposed to sprint up from the block while Boies 鈥斺 stationed at halfcourt 鈥 would take the ball down for a layup.
What actually happened: 鈥淭hey played smart,鈥 Boies said. Tatum successfully countered and the Trojans didn鈥檛 quite get off the block.
Boies found herself on the perimeter with the ball. So she shot it.
鈥淚 said, 鈥榩lease God, if you want us to win,鈥欌 Boies laughed.
Boies鈥 3-pointer with two seconds remaining propelled top seed Mesa Vista to a 49-47 win over No. 3 Tatum, clinching the Trojans鈥 first blue trophy.
The freshman led Mesa Vista (29-2) with 24 points, scoring 16 in a first half that saw the Trojans come out hot before going ice cold. After leading 16-7 at the end of the first quarter, Mesa Vista players combined for just three field goals in the second and third, opening the door for Tatum to build a lead.
The Coyotes (25-7) took a 49-37 lead deep into the fourth quarter. That Boies already had four fouls only made the outcome for Mesa Vista gloomier, especially in a game with 53 free throws between the teams.
Boys Class 3A
Semifinals 鈥 Friday at the Pit
鈥&驳迟;&苍产蝉辫;(10) Robertson 62, (6) Bosque School 58, OT | |
The Bobcats took the reigning state champions to the brink, but the Cardinals prevailed in overtime of a gripping semifinal.
After trailing by as many as eight points in the third quarter, Robertson stormed back to take a 55-52 lead in the fourth. Bosque鈥檚 Josiah Wilson made a 3-pointer with 22 seconds left in regulation to tie it and Robertson missed its final shot, setting up overtime between two of the more unique stories in Class 3A.
The Cardinals (20-12) built a four-point lead in the extra period and would hold on for a win that left Robertson head coach Adam Bustos visibly emotional.
鈥淭hese guys are amazing, you know?鈥 he said. 鈥淲e鈥檝e been through adversity. We battled. And I鈥檝e just seen these guys mature and turn into good young men 鈥 We have some true warriors here and I鈥檓 just super proud of every one of them.鈥
Robertson鈥檚 Nathan Gonzales scored 17 of his game-high 22 points through the first three quarters, buoying the Cardinals as Bosque threatened to pull away. His dunk off an inbound play with under a minute left in overtime put Robertson up 61-57, helping the Cardinals secure their fifth straight appearance in the championship game and a shot at back-to-back titles for the first time in school history.
Wesley Harrigan led the Bobcats (19-11) with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
