Downtown Santa Fe has a new hotel to house its parades of tourists.

The Washington Inn opened on Tuesday, marking one of the first new-construction hotels to come onto the historic area鈥檚 real estate scene in decades. Situated at 220 Otero Street, the property offers 27 residential-style suites and is a stroll from the Santa Fe Plaza.

鈥淵ou can spread out with your friends or family, cook a real meal, but still walk out the door and see the best of Santa Fe,鈥� said co-owner Marc Bertram. 鈥淚t feels personal and residential rather than a traditional hotel room.鈥�

The Washington Inn is a joint venture between the Bertram and Duettra families, both based in Santa Fe. They purchased the property in 2016 and started construction in 2022, aiming to 鈥渃reate the kind of place we would want to stay when visiting another city,鈥� Bertram said.

The hotel spans four separate buildings, including two 1950s-era buildings that have been renovated, a new-construction casita and a new-construction addition to one of the historic buildings. Bertram declined to share the development cost.

The inn鈥檚 suites range from studios to three-bedroom units, offering between 321 and 2,000 square feet. With living rooms, dining rooms, full kitchens and washers and dryers, The Washington Inn was created to offer an extended-stay alternative to traditional hotels.

鈥淭he suites lend themselves to visitors being able to extend their stays,鈥� Bertram said. 鈥淚t really gives a sense that you鈥檙e staying in a luxury second home, but you still have the professional management of a hotel.鈥�

The property鈥檚 suites, available for $300 to $1,200 per night, offer cookware, toiletries and gas fireplaces. The site also features a fitness center, infrared sauna, dog area, boardroom and 15 parking spots. Additional parking is available in the nearby Marcy Street Parking Garage, Bertram said.

Local firm Architecture Alliance designed the property鈥檚 exterior. While the historic facades were largely untouched, the new constructions were inspired by the Territorial style of the 1950s buildings, which were formerly offices. The style, which the families described as contemporary, is marked by stacked stone, clean lines and brick detailing.

The Duettra family鈥檚 interior design company, 4D, handled the property鈥檚 interior, which features what they described as a 鈥渕odern-yet-cozy鈥� feel with colors and art that reflect the high-desert landscape. The owners also commissioned a Santa Fe artist, Lee MacLeod, to create a custom oil painting of Diablo Canyon in the hotel鈥檚 lobby.

鈥淲e wanted the art to feel especially impactful and varied, like eclectic art in a high-end home,鈥� said designer and co-owner Sydney Shults, a member of the Duettra family. 鈥淭he art is filled with beautiful colors while still feeling undoubtedly Southwestern.鈥�

Altogether, work on The Washington Inn project wrapped in August. After a lengthy development period, Bertram said the families are excited to see the project come to life and begin welcoming guests.

鈥淭here鈥檚 not much space left in downtown Santa Fe to add something new. We feel extremely lucky that we have the opportunity to add a new lodging type to the city,鈥� Bertram said.
