Singing award-winning songs, that is, in performances in both Santa Fe and Albuquerque. The Albuquerque shows are slated for the National Hispanic Cultural Center on Saturday, March 30, and Sunday, March 31. The Santa Fe performance is at the Lensic Performing Arts Center on April 6.
鈥淲e wanted to do an all-Broadway show,鈥 said Aaron Howe, NMGMC artistic director. 鈥淲e picked three (award-winning) musicals per decade.鈥
The music includes songs from 鈥淕uys and Dolls,鈥 鈥淗ello, Dolly!,鈥 鈥淐abaret,鈥 鈥淎 Chorus Line,鈥 鈥淐ats,鈥 鈥淩ent,鈥 鈥淭he Lion King,鈥 鈥淗airspray,鈥 鈥淎venue Q,鈥 鈥淭he Book of Mormon鈥 and 鈥淜inky Boots.鈥
The songs have been arranged for a male chorus, Howe said.
鈥淚 had a list of all the Broadway musical winners going back to the 1940s,鈥 he continued. 鈥淲e all just sort of voted.
鈥淚n general, a lot of the songs were designed for both men and women,鈥 Howe added. 鈥淲e had to adapt them to just men鈥檚 voices, which sometimes included changing a key. But you鈥檙e still going to have tons of soloists ... and a drag queen. Vanessa Patricks is our host. She鈥檚 just fabulous. She鈥檚 also a fabulous singer herself.鈥
At the end, audience members can vote for their favorite musical per decade.
鈥淲e鈥檙e doing an award show about musicals who have won an award and give them another award,鈥 Howe said. 鈥淯s gays like our Broadway musicals, but so many other people do as well.鈥
