Instead of doom-scrolling online or mindlessly wandering the shelves of a big box store hoping to find the perfect gift, you can take a trip to one of the many holiday markets happening across New Mexico in November and December.
Several of the markets offer more than vendors selling their wares 鈥� eventgoers can enjoy music, food, performances and maybe even visit with Santa.
Winrock Wonderland is back for its second year and has added a Christmas tree lighting and a free performance of 鈥淭he Nutcracker鈥� featuring the New Mexico Ballet Company.
鈥淲e wanted to add to the experience for the holiday at Winrock,鈥� David Stroud, Winrock event curator, said, 鈥渁nd being able to add a Christmas tree ... brings families to Winrock and throughout the whole holiday season.鈥�
Geri Verble, Placitas Holiday Market coordinator, said that she has seen the holiday market grow year after year with more people attending to meet vendors.
鈥淚t鈥檚 festive and fun and joyful, and it鈥檚 a very community-generated event. And that鈥檚 what makes it so special,鈥� said Verble.
The ABQ Rail Yards Market opens back up for the season with a full holiday market running over two weekends and a smaller indoor market. Alaska Piper, Rail Yards Market of Albuquerque executive director, said the market is an amazing opportunity for small businesses to get their homemade products to consumers.
鈥淚t鈥檚 also a great opportunity for locals and visitors alike to support over 200 small businesses in a one-stop shop,鈥� Piper said. 鈥淲e encourage folks to skip the big box store and shop small, because spending just $20 or $10 locally makes a big difference to a human as opposed to a big box store.鈥�
