Hoping to check out Albuquerque鈥檚 stand-up comedy scene but not sure where to start? 鈥淏est of Burque鈥� at Hyena鈥檚 Comedy Club offers a quarterly showcase of local talent, curated and hosted by Tim Mathis, a comic who has performed on the Comedy Central series, 鈥淗art of the City鈥� with Kevin Hart. The fifth 鈥淏est of Burque,鈥� on Sunday, June 28, features 10 comics, including five headliners.

鈥淚 wanted to put together a show where locals could showcase their talent,鈥� Mathis said.

Mathis goes to as many comedy clubs and open mics as possible to scout out new voices in stand-up, and he hosts his own open mic at Thrive Craft Cannabis every Tuesday.

鈥淚 tell people that鈥檚 the best way to get seen by me, because I also go to other open mics, but that鈥檚 the main one that I do,鈥� Mathis said.

Mathis moved from Los Angeles last year to work at Hyena鈥檚 newly opened Albuquerque club. In addition to working the door, he often performs onstage.

鈥淚鈥檓 basically the in-house comic. I fill in whenever somebody can鈥檛 make it,鈥� Mathis said.

Mathis will open 鈥淏est of Burque鈥� with a 10-minute set. Savannah Holder, Traye Holland, Cardo Madd and Angel Lopez will each do 12 minutes, with several newer comics performing shorter sets.

鈥淐ardo Madd is 鈥� really good. He鈥檚 got a podcast called Community Stepdad. Angel Lopez works at a bunch of different comedy clubs and does shows throughout the state. But I鈥檓 really excited, because it鈥檚 the first time he鈥檒l be performing on a show at Hyena鈥檚,鈥� Mathis said. 鈥淪avannah Holder just did Funny Fiesta, which is our local comedy fest. Then, Traye Holland is a much newer comic. He鈥檚 only been doing comedy for about a year and a half or two years, but he鈥檚 really, really funny.鈥�

The final headliner, award-winning Din茅 comic Josh Fournier, will close out the night.

鈥淭hen, of course, we鈥檝e got Josh Fournier. He鈥檚 done the Netflix Is a Joke Fest (in Los Angeles) and tours all over the country 鈥� a really funny Native comic,鈥� Mathis said. 鈥淗e was on our first 鈥楤est of Burque鈥� show, so I鈥檓 really excited to have him back.鈥�

Mathis said he was impressed with Albuquerque鈥檚 comedy scene from the moment he arrived in the city.

鈥淚 moved to Albuquerque blind. So, I knew they would have some good comedians out here, but I didn鈥檛 know how extensive the comedic community and culture was,鈥� he said. 鈥淏ut when I got here, I was really impressed with a bunch of the comics. So, for the first few shows, it was really easy selecting a lineup.鈥�

Since then, he has been exposed to many more comics and watched others improve their craft.

鈥淎 lot of the comics out here are working really hard, and many of them are really improving. So, I鈥檝e moved some comics from guest spots to feature spots,鈥� Mathis said.

Hyena鈥檚 manager, Ethan Kishi, said the ready supply of quality local talent allows Mathis to feature new comics at every 鈥淏est of Burque鈥� show.

鈥淭here鈥檚 such a great scene out here 鈥� it鈥檚 so tight-knit, and we鈥檝e got such amazing top comedians 鈥� that we are able to rotate, getting a very different lineup every single time,鈥� Kishi said.

For audiences, 鈥淏est of Burque鈥� introduces a wide selection of comedic voices in one fast-paced show 鈥� which Mathis said he tries to keep to 90 minutes.

鈥淧eople usually get a little laughed out after about an hour and a half,鈥� he said.
