Ever dreamed of taking a shot at the Pit? Here's your chance
Before the Lobos take their shots, you can take your own.
The University of New Mexico Hospital is offering free flu vaccines at the Pit before the men鈥檚 basketball team鈥檚 at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18.
The shots will be available when the doors open at 5:30 p.m. 鈥 look for the UNM Hospital team around the main entrance in the northeast corner, UNM Health said in a news release. No appointment is needed.
鈥淕etting the flu shot helps protect both you and those around you, especially as we enter the winter and holiday season,鈥 said UNM Hospital Chief Nursing Officer Maribeth Thornton in a statement. 鈥淰accinating against the flu significantly reduces your chances of being hospitalized with the virus or becoming seriously ill.鈥
Influenza A has been on the rise in the state since the end of October, and the largest group testing positive for the flu are children ages 0-12, according to UNM Health, citing data from TriCore.
鈥淭he largest group of adults testing positive for the virus are ages 26-45,鈥 UNM Health said, adding that, historically, spikes in flu cases occur in mid-December.
If you can鈥檛 make this game, UNM Health is planning a similar event at a UNM women鈥檚 game in the near future.
And the state Department of Heath says insured adults can always contact their local pharmacy or primary care provider to schedule a vaccination appointment. Providers can be found in an online map at or call the NMDOH Helpline at 1-833-SWNURSE (833-796-8773) for assistance.
